Weatherford Police and Fire Department Respond to a Suspicious Package
06/06/2011

On Monday, 06/06/2011, just shortly before 9am, Weatherford Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the rear (north side) of the JC Penney’s store in regards to a suspicious package in the form of a 5 gallon, circular cooler that had been left near the loading dock area of the store. Representatives with the store advised there were no scheduled deliveries to the store over the weekend and that the cooler had not been there prior to closing Friday night.

Immediately, personnel inside the JC Penney’s store were evacuated to the far south parking lot as well as workers in and around Austin Elementary School. Traffic was temporarily shut down on Texas Dr just to the west side of the store for about an hour.

During the course of the investigation, enough suspicion was developed by the departments involved that the Fort Worth Bomb Squad was requested to make the scene. Once they arrived, they deployed their K-9 unit with his handler to sniff the package; however, the K-9 did not hit on it. At that time, the Fort Worth Bomb Squad x-rayed the cooler and found that it was indeed empty.

“In such instances as this, we take it seriously and follow protocol,” stated Fire Marshall Bob Hopkins, “We want to be safe rather than sorry.”
