Theatre Off the Square in Weatherford presents Angel Street, by Patrick Hamilton and presented courtesy of Samuel French, weekends April 29 – May 15, 2011. This classic Victorian drama was written in 1938 and adapted for film as the familiar movie “Gaslight”.
The home of Jack and Bella Manningham on Angel Street in the Pimlico district in 19th century London at first glance appears proper and serene. But it becomes evident that serenity is a façade as the encounters between Jack and Bella turn into confrontations at every turn.
When Jack notices something amiss while having tea with his wife, Bella finds that she must once again defend herself against his growing accusations about her behavior and obvious decent into insanity. As she implores him to have patience with her and show her kindness if she is indeed losing her mind, Jack finds it more and more difficult to deal with her antics and mental decline. When he prepares to leave, as he does the same time each evening, Jack gives Bella a warning regarding her future if she doesn’t improve.
Left alone, Bella attempts to calm down and regain her composure only to be interrupted by an unexpected visitor, Detective Rough. As the kindly detective gains Bella’s trust, he is able to provide her with information about her husband that sheds light on the person he truly is and leads her to face a difficult choice that will impact everyone involved.
Cast members are Amanda Johnson as Bella, Curtis Nelson as Jack, Nikolai Braswell as Detective Rough, Selita Sprunger as Elizabeth and Melissa Whiteman as Nancy. Policemen are played by Kenny Green and Craig Sprunger. Director is Lana Robinson with assistant director, Duncan Alexander.
