CN Reporter denied access at public meeting

March 16, 2010 by Dominic Genetti

At the regular city council meeting in Willow Park March 15, Dominic Genetti, a reporter for The Community News, was denied the use of his video camera.

Notice:Volume is very low in the first part of the video.

The public, with members of the media included, are allowed to photograph, video and record public meetings under the Texas Open Meetings Act.

Willow Park does have an ordinance, established in 1986, that forbids the use of video cameras at city council meetings. However, after calls were made by Randy Keck, publisher of The Community News, to the Texas Attorney General's office in Austin and Parker County Attorney John Forrest, it was confirmed that the Willow Park ordinance violates the Texas Open Meetings Act.

Forrest has been in communication with Willow Park Mayor Ken Hawkins about the matter.
