MEDIA RELEASE
Weatherford Police Arrest Two in “Minor Sting”
03/17/2011

On 03/05/11 officers with the Weatherford Police Department and Agents with TABC conducted an investigation into the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors in Parker County. This investigation was conducted in the form of a "minor sting" operation with the help of an undercover minor. This operation was conducted due to a complaint generated by a concerned citizen. The operation selected the store identified by the complaint and ten other convenience stores within the city limits of Weatherford. Officers were expecting a 60-70% compliance but were very pleased with 81.8% compliance by vendors. Only two locations out of eleven sold to the undercover minor. Two clerks were arrested by warrant after the investigation. Det. Westendorf stated that while conducting stings like this are questionable by some, it is a vital tool to discourage underage drinking with teenage social events like prom and graduation quickly approaching. SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) states some startling facts on their website www.sadd.org to include:

“Among underage drinkers (ages 12-20), 30.8% paid for the alcohol the last time they drank – including 8.3% who purchased the alcohol themselves and 22.3% who gave money to someone else to purchase it.”

“Alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade.”

“In 2008, 11,773 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one third (32%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.”

By limiting the availability of alcohol to minors we take another step to keep our community’s children safe.

The two arrested in the sting are identified as follows:

Melanie Longoria w/f 44yoa of Weatherford
Richard Fields w/m 31yoa of Weatherford
