The Aledo Ladycats basketball team fell to Stephenville 59-52 in overtime tonight in the area championship game in Mineral Wells. Aledo lost senior star Logan Mittie to a knee injury early in the game.
The Aledo Ladycats put up a valiant fight without their star warrior Logan Mittie and forced overtime in a 59-52 loss to the Stephenville Honeybees. Mittie went down with 6:25 to play in the second quarter and Aledo up 17-9. The Ladycats went into the locker room with a 24-21 lead and a lot of concerned faces over their fallen leader.
Hannah Loftin and Mallory kept the Ladycats in the lead going into the fourth quarter. Loftin, who led Aledo with 19, hit two three-pointers in the third and Powell also scored six. The Ladycats held a 38-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Stephenville took its first lead 39-38 with 6:23 to play in the game. Loftin came right back and hit another three to tie the score at 41-41. Stephenville upped it lead again, but Powell and Loftin hit back-to-back three pointers to tie the score at 47. A Loftin to Alana Martin bucket put the Ladycats ahead 49-47 with 2:34 to play. Stephenville answered right back with two free throws to tie the score at 49-49 with 2:34 left.
The Honeybees led 52-49 when Alana Martin scored and a foul was called with just over two minutes to play in overtime Aledo fans were expecting to see Martin at the line with a chance to tie the game. Rather, the referee called charging on Martin and waved off the basket. To make matters worse for Aledo, Martin fouled out on the play. On their next possession, Stephenville hit a three and the game was over.
This was a terrible ending for our outstanding four-year star Logan Mittie. She has captured the heart of the Bearcat Community with her talents and un-selfish play as a Ladycat. Shelby Stockard also played her last game as a Ladycat. She was a terrific defender, rebounder, and team player. Great season, Ladycats!
