Ladycat Playoff Basketball Bracketology

February 17, 2011 by Steve Keck

Anything can happen in the playoffs. Just ask the Brenham Cubs in the 2010 football season. They were the highest ranked team behind Aledo in Class 4A going into the football playoffs. They lost in bi-district.

With four teams making the playoffs in each district, the Texas UIL divides the 164 teams making the playoffs into four Regions. Aledo is in Region I. Within the 32 teams in Region I, the teams are divided into a bracket with the top half containing 16 teams and the bottom half having 16 teams. The winner of the top half plays the winner of the bottom half for the right to represent their region at the State Basketball Tournament in Austin on March 3 and 4.

If Ft. Worth Dunbar had not had to forfeit seven district games, they would have been the best team in the top half of the bracket for Region I. The only ranked team left in the top half of Region I is Waco Midway at # 24. Midway may very well not make it out of the second round playing a tough Springtown team.

Things get very interesting in the bottom half of Region I. Out of the original 164 teams in the state tournament, three of the top five ranked girl’s teams in 4A and in the same lower bracket of Region I. Throw in Dunbar and Midway, and five of the top 25 girl’s teams are in the bottom half of Region I.

Area Game Set:
Aledo (30-20 vs. Stephenville (21-12)
Friday, February 17, 2011
Mineral Wells High School
Mineral Wells, Texas
6:00 P.M.

Of course, getting past Stephenville in any sport is a chore no matter what the team records are. Aledo/Stephenville is one of the best rivalries in all sports for Class 4A.

Possible Region Quarterfinal:

Aledo vs. Mansfield Summit

Summit is currently ranked # 6 in the state and also has 30 victories. All of their losses were to 5A schools earlier in the year. Summit was 14-0 in district. Summit also defeated the only team to defeat Aledo this season, Liberty Christian. Mansfield won their game against Liberty Christian 55-53 on December 3, 2010.

Possible Regional Semi-final

Aledo vs. Canyon

The Canyon Lady Eagles are 31-0 and ranked # 1 in the Class 4A in Texas. They are also ranked # 8 nationally by MaxPreps. They are the highest ranked team from Texas including all Class 5A schools. Canyon lost in the Region I Finals last season to eventual State Champion Mansfield Timberview.
