Board recognizes former WHS football athletes participating in recent college bowl games
Former Weatherford High School athletes who recently participated in college bowl games were recognized at the Jan. 20 Weatherford ISD Board meeting:
Travis McClain – Travis graduated from Weatherford High School in 2007 and currently attends Baylor University. He’s No. 84 on the field and is a wide receiver. Baylor finished the season with a record of 7-5 and was selected to play Illinois in the 2010 Texas Bowl…earning its first post-season bowl appearance since 1994. McClain is the son of Jamie and Donna McClain.
Matt Williams – Matt Williams graduated from Weatherford High School in 2006 and was the story of the year for college football in 2008 when he earned a spot on the Texas Tech team after he won the Lynwood Townhomes “Kick for the Rent Contest.”
At the end of the 2010 season, Williams was named to the second team All-Big 12 Academic... He was one of six kickers to not miss a PAT kick during the 2010 season... second in extra-points made (56)... eighth in scoring among kickers (6.4 ppg)... ninth in field goals made/game (0.69). Texas Tech finished the season with an 8-5 record and played in the Ticket City Bowl at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Williams’ mother, Linda, who teaches communications at the Ninth Grade Center, accepted the award on Matt’s behalf.
Kapron Lewis-Moore – Kapron graduated from Weatherford High School in 2008 and is a Defensive End for the Fightin’ Irish at Notre Dame. In August, Lewis-Moore was named to the preseason Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award Watch list. In 2009 he had 41 tackles or assists…in 2010 he had 62. He’s been scouted by pro football organizations since he stepped on the field in college. Notre Dame finished the season with a record of 8-5 and played in the Sun Bowl in El Paso.
Kapron’s mother, Wanna Lewis, a teacher at Seguin Elementary, accepted the award on Kapron’s behalf.
Tyler Luttrell – Tyler graduated from Weatherford High School in 2006 and joined the TCU Horned Frogs where he was moved from quarterback to wide receiver as a red-shirted freshman. In 2007 he was named TCU’s Offensive Scout Team MVP. In 2009 he was converted from wide receiver to safety and made his first collegiate start in the season opener. That year he had 35 tackles or assists, and in 2010, he had 10. During TCU’s opening game against Oregon State, Luttrell suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for part of this season. But he was able to play in the Rose Bowl game on Jan. 1. TCU finished the season with a perfect record of 13-0 with their Rose Bowl win.
