Board recognizes Citizens Police at Jan. 20 meeting
Weatherford's Police Department began offering a Citizen Police Academy in 1992. Graduates of the first Academy expressed an interest in an ongoing program of instruction and support. And in January 1995, 18 graduates of previous academies became charter members of the Weatherford Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (WCPAAA).
The purpose of this organization is not only to promote a positive image of law enforcement, but also support and assist the Weatherford Police Department when requested.
Participants have volunteered at Weatherford ISD Home Football Games, a high school playoff game held at Kangaroo Stadium, the Homecoming Parade, Prom, and Project Graduation.
They also give nighttime security at WISD campuses while on patrol, and they assist with finger-printing identification programs for students.
Weatherford ISD personnel has estimated that these volunteers have given over 1,000 hours of service each year to the District. Their presence at events and on patrol help the District maintain a safe environment for both students and staff members.
