Bearcats, Conn down North Crowley in nightcap

Aledo senior pitcher Austin Vassberg allowed just four hits and AHS scored in all but one inning as the Bearcats defeated South Grand Prairie, 13-6, Friday afternoon at windy and frigid Bearcat Field in the Jerry Durant Classic.

On Friday night, the Bearcats (4-1) slapped 10 hits in a 6-3 victory over North Crowley. Ryan Conn was the winning pitcher for AHS.

Today (Saturday, Feb. 27) Aledo will face Haltom at noon and Midlothian at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at Bearcat Field.

On Friday afternoon against SGP, the Bearcats scored six runs in the first inning to take a 6-4 lead. The big hit in the frame was a three-run homer to left field by senior first baseman Asher Zeeb.

"He (SGP pitcher) threw me a fast ball," Zeeb said. "At first, I thought I had popped the ball up. But it just kept carrying."

Aledo tallied a run in the third, added four runs in the fourth and scored two in the fifth and final inning (game was called on time-limit rule). The fifth-inning runs were courtesy of a two-run double by junior outfielder Andrew Tort.
