Aledo (15-0) and La Marque (12-3) are mirror images in a lot of respects. Both teams have a rich tradition of going deep into the playoffs. Aledo is seeking its third state title and second Class 4-A Division II title in a row.
La Marque has not advanced to the championship game since 2006, but is making its tenth trip overall seeking its sixth state crown. It wasn’t easy for the Cougars to get into the playoffs in tough District 24-4A. La Marque was the final playoff team in Division II to make the playoffs, and the only team still standing. Schools from District 24-4A have combined for a 14-3 record during the Class 4-A playoffs. Friendswood was knocked out by Lake Travis in the state semi-finals in Division I.
La Marque was a football powerhouse in the 1990s. After losing two consecutive championship games in 1993 and 1994 to Stephenville, The Cougars ran off three consecutive 4A Division II championships from 1995 to 1997.
The Cougars are peaking at the right time. They have outscored their last three playoff opponents by a combined score of 109-49. Last Friday, they dispatched Corpus Christi Calallen 42-18.
La Marque and Aledo have more in common than playoff success. They are both led by junior stars at the quarterback and running back positions. La Marque junior running back Tim Wright has rushed for 2,137 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. Aledo’s junior sensation running back Johnathan Gray has rushed for 2,903 yards and 51 touchdowns this season.
At quarterback, La Marque junior Emanuel Williams has thrown for 2,510 yards and 32 touchdowns. Williams has also rushed for 441 yards and 8 touchdowns. Bearcat junior quarterback Matthew Bishop has passed for 2,621 yards and 31 touchdowns. Bishop has added 717 yards on the ground and 6 touchdowns.
Bishop has been the hot hand for the Bearcats over the past three playoff games. With Gray nursing a tender knee, and opposing defenses loading up to stop the run, Bishop has passed for 534 yards and 8 touchdowns the past three games. He has added 295 yards on the ground, including 162 against Poteet with a rushing touchdown.
The Cougars have a senior-laden defense and talented defensive line, led by Division I prospect and team leader Antonio Wright. Wright is considering TCU among others. The La Marque offensive line is led by 320 center David Gonzales.
