Sweetwater, TX- Matthew Bishop passed for a season high four touchdown passes in a 40-14 victory over the Hereford Whitefaces in the region semi-final game played in Sweetwater. The Bearcats will play the Stephenville Yellow Jackets in the regional finals next Friday night at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.
Both teams started off slowly in a scoreless first quarter. Aledo scored first on a five yard run. The extra point was missed. Hereford took a 7-6 lead on a 14-yard run by quarterback Ryan Martinez. Aledo scored on its next possession on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Matt Bishop to Michael Mann.
Aledo scored again in the second half on a nifty swing pass from Bishop to Johnathan Gray for a 43-yard touchdown with 1:15 left in the half. Hereford came right back aided by three Bearcat defensive penalties and scored with :07 seconds remaining in the half to make the score Aledo 19 and Hereford 14 at halftime.
Cameron Cunningham picked off a Martinez pass on their first possession of the second half and returned the ball 38 yards for a Bearcat touchdown. The Kevin Frantz kick increased the Aledo lead to 26-14.
The interception by Cunningham ignited the Aledo defense. The Bearcats gave up only 59 yards in the second half. Bishop finished the game with 275 passing yards on an off night for Johnathan Gray. He carried 15 times for 83 yards in his lowest rushing performance of the season.
