The Aledo Bearcats began their defense of the 4-A Division II State Football Championship with a convincing 56-7 win over the O.D. Wyatt Chaparrals Thursday night at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth. The Bearcats got off to a great start with Jonathan Gray scoring four touchdowns and finishing the first half with 189 rushing yards on only 12 carries. Gray’s final touchdown came on an electrifying 34 yard run to end the half. Quarterback Matthew Bishop completed touchdown passes of 11 yards to Todd Christian and a 77 yard pass to Justin Breshears. Ben Jopling also scored on a one yard run in the first half.
The Bearcats never ran an offensive play in the third quarter with the only scoring coming on a 52 yard interception for a touchdown by Connor Bradham. Wyatt was on offense the entire third quarter with two drives consuming the entire time and moving play into the fourth quarter with the drive ending on a Wyatt sack on fourth down. When the Bearcats came back on offense, Gray and Bishop were out of the game replaced by Clay Wooten at quarterback and Jopling at tailback.
The Bearcats will meet the winner of Friday night’s game between Everman and Waco. If Everman wins, Coach Tim Buchanan announced the game area game is tentatively scheduled for Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. If Waco wins, Aledo won a home and home coin flip with Waco and the game will be played at 7:30 at Bearcat Stadium.
