The Southwest Premier of The Red Velvet Cake War by Jones, Hope and Wooten is at Theatre Off the Square in Weatherford, Texas weekends through Sunday, Oct. 31. The play is directed by Jon R. Kruse.
In the latest comedy by this trio of playwrights, audiences are introduced to the Verdeen family of Sweetgum, Texas as the time for their annual family reunion is drawing near. The plan for this year is to also celebrate the 90th birthday of Uncle Aubrey, so it’s a special year, indeed. But Aunt La Merle, who believes you can agree with her or you can be wrong, has put her foot down that there will be no family reunion this year due to the recent legal issues of her niece, Gaynelle, who crashed her vehicle into the mobile home of her ex-husband’s girlfriend.
Gaynelle, along with cousins Jimmie Wyvette and Peaches, decide hosting the family reunion would be the perfect way for the court appointed psychologist to see that Gaynelle is indeed as sane as can be and does not need any mental health facility. The upcoming family reunion turns into a bitter battle for the better batter of the best red velvet cake as a wager is made between Gaynelle and Aunt La Merle. Attempting to bake the best cake, however, turns out to be the least of the chaos-inducing frenzy. On the day the reunion is set to take place, the air conditioner goes out, the menu for the reunion turns out to consist of a wide variety of beans, and the weather center sends out a Texas favorite … a tornado warning right in the middle of the reunion. The tornado warning pales in comparison to the Verdeens’ antics as they deal with relatives, neighbors and acts of God.
The cast for The Red Velvet Cake War includes Cynthia Daniels, Catherine Wise, Peggy Osburn, Joyce Eckstein and Duncan Alexander. Others in the premier cast are Laurie Jones, Karen Dohoney, Ray Shannon, Wally Jones, Cynthia Sadler, Darlene Woodruff and Jordan Nissen.
Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. The Bakery and Sandwich Shoppe of Weatherford, owned by Carole Malugani, will provide complimentary red velvet cupcakes for audience members at each performance. Tickets are $10 in advance at Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and Weatherford Senior Center. Prices at the door are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and matinee tickets for $9.
