A 17-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday afternoon as he attempted to cross Interstate 20 on the eastbound side between Ranch House Road and FM 5. The incident occurred at 3:41 p.m.
The fatality, believed to be a Willow Park resident, was struck as he entered the lanes of traffic on the freeway. At press time there was still an ongoing investigation as to why or what caused him to step into the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the subject is a female from Eastland County. She stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. There is no indication of any wrong doing on the part of the driver of the motor vehicle.
“Despite the selfless efforts of off-duty EMS personnel and medical personnel who happened to be passing by, who performed CPR on the subject, he was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth by LifeCare, and was pronounced deceased at 4:29 p.m.,” according to Willow Park Police Chief Brad Johnson.
The accident led to a severe traffic jam on I-20 as emergency responders appeared at the scene. Investigators closed two lanes for about an hour as they worked to gather as much evidence as possible from the scene.
The investigation, conducted by both the Willow Park Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, is ongoing. The name of the victim had not been officially released at press time.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
