Texas Frontier Forts
March 22 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm$20 – $30
Texas Frontier Forts and their relationship to Weatherford will be the topic of this year’s Doss After Dark. Classes will run from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays from March 22 to April 26 at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford.
Taught by Jon Vandagriff, participants will learn about each fort, its history, and its place in the development of West Texas.
“Without the frontier forts, we wouldn’t have Texas opening to pioneers in 1848, just after Texas became a state,” said Doss Curator Amanda Edwards. “Jon will be discussing Fort Worth, Fort Belknap, Fort Griffin, Fort Phantom Hill, Fort Concho, and Fort Sill. Each of them has a story to tell and a place of importance in the settlement of Texas.”
Vandagriff is a former daily newspaper editor and college history professor emeritus with 34 years of experience making the story of Texas come alive. He is also the author of two books on Parker County History and is working on telling the story of Weatherford College’s 150-year history of educating Parker County.
The cost of the class is $20 for Doss Partners (members) and $30 for the general public. Money raised from the class will be donated to the Doss’ upcoming summer programs.
