A Look Behind a Landfill

May 12, 2016 @ 7:00 pm

The Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will host a program on the wildlife habitat behind the Linkcrest Waste Management landfill at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Cherry Park Community Center, 313 W. Davis St. in Weatherford.

Zooming along Interstate 20 past the now-closed landfill near the Parker/Tarrant county line, motorists may never give a second thought to what lies behind that looming man-made hillside. If they did, they might never suspect that it shelters a 325-acre Certified Wildlife Habitat created and maintained by Waste Management when it closed the landfill in 2007.

The story of how Waste Management turned trash into an environmental resource will be the focus of a program by company spokeswoman Greta Calvery at the May 12 meeting in Weatherford of the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

For example, when the landfill was closed and ready to be covered, the company built the soil cover four feet deep to allow reseeding with deep-rooted native grasses rather than using man-made materials. Acreage behind the hill has been restored with native plants to attract bees, birds and butterflies, ponds have been designed to preserve aquatic plants and animals, and even the gas emitted from the landfill is recycled on-site to provide energy for the waste transfer station that operates there.

Calvery has more than 30 years’ experience in the environmental, recycling and waste management fields.

She will explain the history and plans for the site, as well as how community groups may visit this hidden treasure.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Cherry Park Community Center, 313 W. Davis St. in Weatherford. A short chapter business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. The public is always welcome and light refreshments will be available.

The mission of the Cross Timbers Chapter is to promote the conservation, research and use of native plants and plant habitats in Texas through education, outreach and example.  For more information, visit http://npsot.org/CrossTimbers.
