New exhibit at Doss Center

Trail Drivers is the newest exhibit opening to the public Feb. 20 at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford. Visitors can learn more about the famous and infamous cowboys who made Texas a name known throughout the country from the end of the Civil War through 1900. Longhorn cattle were driven by Goodnight and Loving from the wilds of Texas to market in Denver. “Parker County played an integral role in the development of the Goodnight Loving story and that legacy continues today,” said Amanda Rush, curator. “Visitors will learn about Charles Goodnight’s chuck wagon design and how Loving’s body returned to Weatherford after he met his untimely death on the trail.” In addition to learning about cattle drivers’ past, visitors can connect the story of the longhorn cattle’s importance to Texas history to the conservation efforts of today to keep the breed alive. The exhibit will be in the museum’s Cartwright Gallery.

The opening on Feb. 19 will be for members only. Attire for the evening is Dressy Western and attendees must present proof of membership for free admission to the exhibit opening. Memberships may be purchased the night of the reception.

Poverty Simulation

A poverty simulation will be from 9-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, 1400 Texas Drive, Weatherford. Walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in the community action poverty simulation titled, "Poverty, Parker County." This experience provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. The experience is divided into four, 15-minute sessions, each of which represents one week you must provide for your family and maintain your home. To register, visit www.centerofhopetx.com/Poverty.

"Unearthed"

The Doss Heritage and Culture Center will host the “Unearthed” exhibit through April 1 in the Cartwright Gallery, featuring artists E.O. “Ted” Hemenway and Dwain Kelley. Hemenway’s work, Texas Wildwood Originals, started as a hobby but has become a passion for the artist. The natural materials he uses are gathered from ranches all around Texas. Species used are pecan, oak, walnut, bois d’ arc (or simply “bodark” here in Texas), birds-eye maple, cedar and his most used wood-mesquite. Dwain Kelley calls his pieces Sculptural Assemblages and uses a palette of old wood, metals, gold leaf, cloth, glass, rocks, or new materials aged to emulate the look of another time. He describes his work as “grounded in the unearthing of another time.” The DHCC is located at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford. Hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 1 - 5 p.m.

PAINT (Professional Artists in North Texas) is a group of passionately committed artists who make a weekly practice of painting outdoors. The subject matter is landscapes and botanicals, but they also paint still lives and figurative works. The PAINT exhibit includes 13 different professional North Texas artists, including Pamela Blaies, Tina Bohlman, Ann Hardy, Cheri Irwin, Shirley Kinworthy, Beverly Richmond, Paula Robinson, Arlene Butterworth Taylor, Irma Ward, Frances Chausse White, Margie Whittington, and Trish Wise. The DHCC is located at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford. Hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 1 - 5 p.m.

Artist Reception

One of the most anticipated exhibits of the year is on display at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center until Jan. 3, 2012.

Expressions From the Soul features artists such as Linda Sale, Cathy Quest, Jane Conkling, Marilyn Brumley, Judy Mason, Chris Snoddy, Martha Spurlock, Carol Noeding, Don Collins, Jim Friddle, Gail Sloan, Bill Barrick, Dale Ousley, Mike Wells, Don Collier, Satch Grimley, Beth Prichard, Linda Henry, Marcia Matcham, Jenn Parker, Pat Stroud and Sherri Woodard Coffey.

“All of the Expressions From the Soul artists are from Texas and are professional artists, which means they earn their living from their art. There will be oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, but also metal sculpture, jewelry, glass, and pottery,” said Exhibit Curator C.B. Williams.

“We’ve been scouring galleries, art shows and outdoor festivals over the past year for artists to include as part of this exhibit. We looked for quality artists. And, like years past, if you love it you can take it home with you,” Williams added.

All of the pieces will be on sale with prices ranging from $50 to $30,000.

“This has been such a popular show that we had to limit artists to no more than three pieces,” said Heather Castagna, Executive Director of the DHCC. “The best part of purchasing a piece of art, is that a portion of the proceeds benefit our programs. You get quality artwork that helps our community.”

Candlelight gift market

The Doss Heritage and Culture Center will host a Candlelight Gift Market Dec. 9-11 in conjunction with the Parker County Heritage Society’s annual Candlelight Tour of Homes on Dec. 10. The market kicks off with a preview night on Dec. 9, and continues from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the following day. On Sunday, the gift market will be open from noon to 5 p.m. With only a few spaces left, the DHCC has cut the price of vendor spaces $75 while they last.
“The Doss Heritage and Culture Center is again a stop on the annual Weatherford Candlelight Tour of Homes. After visitors tour our exhibits, they can also get some of their holiday shopping completed. We will have a wide array of specialty items, local vendors and holiday items for sale,” said Betsy Pedigo, Operations Manager.
