August is one of the most difficult months to adopt pets, but the Weatherford Parker County Animal Shelter has plans to make this August one of the hottest adoption months yet.
Aug. 16 the WPCAS will be working in conjunction with 33 other animal shelters in the Metroplex to host an “Empty the Shelter Day” event across North Texas. For this one-day event, the WPCAS will be waiving all fees associated with adoptions for approved adopters. That’s correct, adopt for free. And to make it easier for potential adopters, the shelter will be opening early at 10 a.m. and will stay open until 5 p.m. As always, adoptions from WPCAS will include the animal’s spay or neuter, rabies and other core vaccinations, microchip, and discounted pet insurance from petfinder.com.
It’s not just an event about adopting pets for free; it’s an event about pet education. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk with Susan Herbert, local dog trainer, to discuss behavioral issues and other concerns with their own pets. She can give advice on integrating new pets with the current pet family.
Parker County Pets Alive! will be onsite passing out goodie bags full of toys, leashes, and educational materials to adopters, as well as other local rescue groups like Parker Paws and Bird Link Sanctuary. The shelter’s volunteer group will be there to greet people and assist in finding the perfect pet, as well as enroll new volunteers.
The shelter has also arranged to have free snow cones for attendees, whether adopting or not. There will be food and drinks as well. The shelter’s loyal community partner, Papa John’s Pizza in Weatherford, will also be at the event providing pizza to anyone who comes and walks dogs.
WPCAS plans to make this a goal setting day by giving every adoptable animal in the shelter a permanent home. So whether in the market for a new pet or just want to see how beautiful the local animal shelter is, come out and visit Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
