Parker County Heritage Society will meet Aug. 19 in the home of Nathan and Abby Hamessely at 410 W Spring at 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Dr. Debbie Liles, Parker County resident who teaches history at the University of North Texas in Denton and is working on her latest book under contract by LSU Press. Her research examines the connection between slavery and livestock on the frontier of Texas during the 1850s and 1860s. This presentation will focus on Parker County and its participation in a much larger story. It will show how events like the California and Colorado gold rushes of 1849 and 1858 and the Civil War were events that contributed to population growth, lucrative cattle drives, and manipulation by men involved with the livestock industry. Anyone interested in Parker County History is invited to attend. For questions call Linda Murdock 817-598-1683.
