Aledo hoops teams to host Everman today as District 8-5A play continues

Aledo senior guard Dawson Gates looks down low during the Bearcats loss to Centennial on Tuesday. The Bearcats and Ladycats will continue District 8-5A play today against Everman at the AHS gym. The boys game will start at 6:30 p.m. followed by the girls contest at approximately 8 p.m.

District 8-5A basketball action continues today at the Aledo High School gym when the Bearcats and Ladycats host Everman.

The Bearcats and Bulldogs will tip off at 6:30 p.m. at the AHS gym.

Aledo will bring a 1-1 district mark into the contest, while Everman (2-0) tries to stay on top of the league standings.

The Ladycats and Lady Bulldogs will tip off after the boys' game at approximately 8 p.m.

District records even as Ladycats run past Centennial but Bearcats fall

Entering the final quarter with the game tied, the Aledo Ladycats went on an 18-6 fourth-quarter run to race past Burleson Centennial, 47-35, Tuesday night in a District 8-5A basketball game at Centennial High School.

The win evens the Ladycats district mark at 2-2. The Ladycats will continue district play at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 at home against Everman.

The Bearcats raced out to a 6-0 lead at Centennial on Tuesday but never led again as the Spartans ended the opening period on a 13-2 run on their way to a 75-36 win.

The loss levels the Bearcats District 8-5A record at 1-1. The Bearcats will continue district play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 at home against Everman.

Bearcats, Ladycats resume District 8-5A hoops play today at Burleson Centennial

District hoops action is back as both the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats basketball teams will resume District 8-5A play today at Burleson Centennial.

The Bearcats bring a 1-0 league mark into the contest. Tip off against the Spartans (0-1) will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Centennial High School gym.

The Ladycats (1-2) hope to even up their district mark against the Lady Spartans (2-1).

Tip off will be following the boys' game at approximately 8 p.m.

Sam Houston comes back to defeat Bearcats, 55-45

Arlington Sam Houston went on a 21-8 run in the fourth quarter to erase a three-point deficit on its way to a 55-45 win over the Aledo Bearcats Tuesday night at the Moritz Auto Group Holiday Classic at the Aledo High School gym.

The loss gives the Bearcats (7-12, 1-0 in 8-5A) a 1-3 mark for the tournament.

Aledo will play next at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Burleson Centennial as the Bearcats continue district play.

The contest was a game of runs as Sam Houston raced out to an 11-2 lead in the opening period, but over the course of the end of the first quarter and into the second the Bearcats came back with a 21-4 run to take a 23-15 lead.

Sam Houston tied the score at 41-41 with 3:27 remaining and followed with a 14-4 run to seal the win.

Bearcats run past Abilene, 64-54

Braxton McCoy scored 18 points, Bryson Power added 11 and Luke Bishop finished with 10 to lead the Aledo Bearcats to a 64-54 victory over Abilene High School Monday night at the Moritz Auto Group Holiday Classic at the Aledo High School gym.

The win advances the Bearcats to the consolation bracket semifinals. Aledo will play next at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the main AHS gym.

The Bearcats led 17-13 after the first quarter and 33-28 at the half.

Both teams scored 14 points in the third period as the Bearcats took a 47-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Also scoring for Aledo were Dawson Gates and Cam Caldwell, each with eight points, Brevin McCoy with six and Dakota Fischer with three.

Bearcats fall in Moritz hoops tournament opener

Keller Central jumped out to a 20-9 lead and never looked back as the Chargers ran past the Aledo Bearcats, 52-34, Monday afternoon at the Moritz Auto Group Holiday Classic at the Aledo High School gym.

The Bearcats will continue tournament play at 7:30 p.m. today against Abilene at the AHS gym.

Braxton McCoy led the Bearcats with nine points, with Dawson Gates adding eight, including a pair of three-point buckets.

Goings heads list of four Aledo Ladycats on TSWA Class 5A all-state volleyball team

Aledo sophomore middle hitter Maddie Goings (13) earned first-team, all-state honors on the Texas Sports Writers Association volleyball team.

Two Ladycats - senior libero Tyler Lucas and senior outside hitter Madison Lopez - earned all-state, second-team honors.

Selected to the all-state, third team was sophomore setter Erin Weiss.

The Ladycats were the undefeated champions of District 8-5A and were state semifinalists.

STATE CHAMPS! Bearcats come back to take 49-45 victory over Temple for 5A Division I championship

It is said that football is a game of inches.

Make that 36 inches for the Aledo Bearcats.

Trailing 45-42 to Temple with less than a minute to play in the Class 5A, Division I state championship football game Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the defending state champion Bearcats faced a fourth and one at the Temple 10.

The Bearcats had the option to try for a relatively-short 27-yard field goal to tie the contest and potentially send it to overtime, but first-year Bearcats head coach Steve Wood opted instead to go for the win.

Wood named permanent Bearcats head football coach

Steve WoodSteve WoodAledo ISD superintendent Derek Citty announced shortly after the Class 5A, Division I state championship football game - won by Aledo 49-45 Saturday - that he is removing the “Interim” title by naming Steve Wood as the Aledo Bearcats permanent head football coach.

Wood, a longtime Aledo assistant and former defensive coordinator, was named Bearcats interim head football coach on July 31 when Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan stepped down after 21 years to concentrate on his athletic director duties.
