No. 17 Ladycats move to 10-1 in 6-4A with 64-46 win
Paced by a double double from senior Shane Smith, the Aledo Bearcats stopped a four-game District 6-4A losing streak with a convincing 62-55 victory over Boswell Saturday afternoon at the AHS gym.
Smith pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while also scoring 12 points. Three other Bearcats reached double figures in scoring including junior guard Robbie Spreier with a team-high 15 points, junior guard Danny Glass with 11 and junior guard Matt Barron with 10.
Also scoring for the Bearcats were sophomore post Mike Wilson with six points, and senior guards Gregg Lowe and Dillon Hawkins, each with four.
Defensively, Spreier and Smith led AHS with four steals apiece, with Lowe adding three.
The Bearcats led 17-15 after the first quarter and built a 29-21 lead at the half. Spreier led the Bearcats with 11 points in the opening half, including a pair of three-point buckets.
Boswell outscored Aledo 10-8 in the third quarter to cut the Bearcats' lead to six points as the game entered the fourth period.
Today's (Friday, Jan. 29) scheduled District 6-4A basketball games between Aledo and Boswell are postponed due to weather and varsity games only will be rescheduled tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 30) at the Aledo High School gym.
The Ladycats will play Boswell at noon tomorrow followed by the Bearcats/Pioneers game at 1:30 p.m.
The start times of today's Aledo/Mineral Wells soccer matches at Bearcat Stadium have been changed. The Ladycats and Lady Rams will kickoff at 5 p.m. followed by the boys' contest at 7 p.m.

The Aledo High School basketball teams will host Boswell at the AHS gym while the soccer teams will entertain Mineral Wells at Bearcat Stadium on Friday, Jan. 29.
The state-ranked No. 17 Ladycats basketball team is 9-1 and sits atop of the District 6-4A standings. Springtown also sports a 9-1 district mark, but Aledo holds the tiebreaker due to a 10-point win at Springtown earlier in league play.
The Ladycats have won four consecutive games and will be facing a Lady Pioneer team with a 5-5 district mark. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
The Bearcats (1-7) will face a 2-6 Boswell squad. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The AHS defending-district-champion soccer teams are both 1-0 in league play.
Bearcats drop 56-35 decision to Bears
Five Aledo Ladycats reached double figures as the AHS ladies ran past the Brewer Lady Bears, 87-35, Tuesday night in District 6-4A action at Brewer.
The win elevates the No. 17 and district-leading Ladycats to 9-1 in 6-4A. The Ladycats will continue district play at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at home against Boswell.
Junior guard Logan Mittie led the Ladycats with 21 points, with freshman wing Mallory Powell and senior post Tara Gough each recording 14 points.
Also reaching double figures was sophomore wing Caileen Tallant with 13 points and junior guard Sarah Hawkins with 10.
Aledo jumped out to 17-5 lead after the opening period. Paced by nine points from Gough with an additional seven from Tallant, the Ladycats scored 29 points in the second quarter to take a 46-20 lead at the half.
The Ladycats put the game away with a 21-7 run in the third period to take a 67-27 lead into the final stanza.
Also scoring for Aledo were junior wing Shelby Stockard with eight points, senior guard Melissa Howell with four and sophomore guard Alanna Martin with three.
Brewer 56, Bearcats 35

AHS basketball teams play at Brewer on Tuesday, while soccer teams travel to Springtown
Aledo High School teams will be in district action on Tuesday (Jan. 26) as the basketball teams travel to Brewer, and the soccer teams open district play at Springtown.
In girls' hoops, the state-ranked No. 17 Ladycats will bring an 8-1 District 6-4A record into Brewer to face the 1-8 Lady Bears. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Aledo ladies are in a first-place tie with Springtown, although Aledo sits at the top of the standings due to a win over the Lady Porcupines 10 days ago.
The Bearcats (1-6) are seeking revenge from an earlier loss to Brewer. The Bears will bring a 5-2 record into the contest, which is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. at the Brewer High School gym.
Aledo goalkeeper Justen Woody turned back three late Crowley scoring chances to preserve a Bearcats' 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon in the boys' championship game of the Moritz/Kia Tournament of Champions at Bearcats Stadium.
With his team holding a one-goal advantage after Crowley scored a goal with 5:32 remaining in the match, Woody made a jump save at the 3:01 mark, and with 1:27 left to play the Aledo keeper forced a wide shot on a penalty kick from 20 yards out.
Crowley had an excellent chance to tie the game with 20 seconds left, but Woody had all angles covered as a Crowley header went high and to the left of the net as the Bearcats held on for the win.
Aledo's Matt Nickell was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Nickell scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 16:55 left in the second half. Nickell bent a low shot from the right side from 20 yards out through traffic into the lower left corner of the goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Bearcats got on the board when Thomas Davis scored on a penalty kick in the box at the 27:42 mark of the second half.
Aledo freshman wing Mallory Powell scored 16 points and junior guard Logan Mittie added 15, including nine in the fourth quarter, to lead the Ladycats to a 50-44 victory over Birdville Friday night in a key District 6-4A game at Birdville.
The win raises the state-ranked No. 17 Ladycats' district mark to 8-1.
Aledo and Springtown - a winner Friday night over Saginaw - are locked in a first place tie in 6-4A as Saginaw drops a game back.
The Ladycats will continue district play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Brewer.
The Ladycats trailed 24-18 at the half. In the third quarter, AHS held the Lady Hawks to just seven points while scoring 19 to take a 37-31 lead into the fourth period.
A key to the game was second-half free throw shooting. At one point from the middle of the third period until late in the fourth, the Ladycats connected on 16 consecutive free throws, while Birdville struggled at the line.
Both teams scored 13 points in the final stanza as the Ladycats hung on for a six-point win.
The Aledo Bearcats soccer team defeated Red Oak 2-1 in a shootout Friday afternoon to reach tomorrow's championship game of the Moritz/Kia Tournament of Champions at Bearcat Stadium.
Kickoff in the boys' title match will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Bearcat Stadium.
In other Moritz/Kia TOC action, the Aledo Ldycats fell to Amarillo Caprock, 3-2.

The Bearcats will play in the boys’ tournament semifinals at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 22) at Bearcat Stadium against the winner of the Denton/Red Oak match.
The Bearcats opened the scoring at the 29:15 mark of the opening half when Davis sent a corner kick to Brady Lain, who found the back of the net from in front of the goal.
Just six minutes later, Davis beat the Yellowjackets’ keeper with a 25-yard shot that reached the upper-right corner for a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats’ lead grew to 3-0 when Lain found Davis in front of the goal. The senior blasted a shot from 15 yards out at the 20:06 mark.
Bearcats fall in overtime to Rams
Aledo junior guard Logan Mittie scored a game-high 30 points and freshman guard Mallory Powell added 11 to lead the Ladycats to a 68-46 victory over Mineral Wells Tuesday night in District 6-4A action at the Aledo High School gym.
The win raises the Ladycats' mark to 7-1 in district play. Aledo remains in a three-way tie for first place with Saginaw and Springtown.
The Ladycats will continue district play at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22 at Birdville.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were sophomore wing Caileen Tallant with nine points, Gough and sophomore guard Alanna Martin, each with seven, and sophomore guard Haley Loftin and junior guard Shelby Stockard, each with two.
Mineral Wells 57, Bearcats 50 OT
The Bearcats dropped to 1-5 in District 6-4A after a 57-50 overtime loss to Mineral Wells Tuesday night at the AHS gym.
With the game tied at 46-46, the Bearcats' last-second shot was partially blocked as the Rams forced overtime.
Mineral Wells outscored the Bearcats 11-4 in the extra session to take the win.
