Bearcats seniors realizing dream of lifetimes preparing for state championship game

Aledo senior football players Devin Davis, Danny Heiss, Cy Wilson, Dillon Hawkins and Trey Ozee were having a blast Tuesday afternoon at “Media Day” at the Aledo High School field house, talking it up with area reporters and television broadcasters about their thoughts leading up to the Class 4A, Division II state championship game.

The Bearcats will face Brenham at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 at D.K. Royal Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Tickets will be $10 at the gate, and can be purchased until noon (last lunch period) Friday at Aledo ISD campuses and the administration building.

Mittie scores 30, nearly records triple-double to lead Ladycats to district-opening win over Mineral Wells

Aledo junior guard Logan Mittie scored 30 points, grabbed nine rebounds and recorded nine steals to lead the Ladycats to a 56-28 victory over the Mineral Wells Lady Rams Tuesday night in the girls' District 6-4A basketball opener at Mineral Wells.

The win - the seventh in a row for the Ladycats - raises AHS' overall mark to 12-5. The Ladycats will continue district play at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at home against Birdville.

BEARCATS HEADED TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER 40-28 COMEBACK WIN

Ladycats down Sanger to reach championship game

Held scoreless for the first five minutes of the game and trailing by 18 at the half, the Aledo Bearcats scored 30 points in the third quarter and held Paschal to 24 points for the entire second half to come back and defeat the Class 5A Panthers, 62-55, Friday afternoon at the Granbury tournament.

At the Decatur tournament, the Ladycats defeated Sanger Friday afternoon to reach the tournament's championship game. Tip off at the title game will be at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, at Decatur High School.

Ladycats 49, Richland 27

With the Aledo Ladycats leading by six points at the half on the road against Richland, head coach Rusty Johnson's halftime speech to his team focused mainly on defense.

"I simply told them we needed to turn up our intensity, especially on defense," Johnson said.

Apparently, the Ladycats were listening.

Aledo came out with a shut down, pressure defense that held Richland scoreless for first 8:42 of the second half - including the entire third quarter - while pouring in 28 points to come away with an impressive 49-27 victory in a non-district contest.

Bearcats advance to state semifinals after running past Everman, 34-22

In a game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated, the Aledo Bearcats began the contest with 34 unanswered points on their way to a convincing 34-22 victory over the Everman Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in a Class 4A state quarterfinal matchup at Elk Stadium in Burleson.

The win advances the Bearcats (13-1) to the Class 4A, Division II state semifinals where they will play Denison at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Collins Stadium in Denton.
