Anything can happen in the playoffs. Just ask the Brenham Cubs in the 2010 football season. They were the highest ranked team behind Aledo in Class 4A going into the football playoffs. They lost in bi-district.
With four teams making the playoffs in each district, the Texas UIL divides the 164 teams making the playoffs into four Regions. Aledo is in Region I. Within the 32 teams in Region I, the teams are divided into a bracket with the top half containing 16 teams and the bottom half having 16 teams. The winner of the top half plays the winner of the bottom half for the right to represent their region at the State Basketball Tournament in Austin on March 3 and 4.
ESPN would call this game an “Instant Classic”. Aledo and Ft. Worth Dunbar are two of the best Class 4A teams in North Texas. Both teams slugged it out in a physical game played at Saginaw High School Tuesday night. Aledo was the last team standing in a dramatic 58-54 come-from-behind victory.
Things looked bleak for Aledo when Destiny Price hit a three for the Lady Wildcats to put Dunbar up by nine 52-43 with only 4:25 left to play in the game.
Senior Logan Mittie went to work in the fourth quarter scoring 11 points on one three-pointer and eight for eight free throw shooting in crunch time. Mittie led all scorers with 26. Mallory Powell added 13 and Alana Martin 10.
The Aledo Ladycats came from nine points behind with a little more than four minutes left in the game to take a 58-54 bi-district win over Fort Worth Dunbar tonight. Watch this Web site for more details.

Ladycats vs. Ft. Worth Dunbar
Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00 PM
Saginaw High School
The Aledo Bearcats finished up the 2010-2011 basketball with a home loss to the Brewer Bears 49-37. Aledo dug a deep hole in the first half. The only Bearcat points in the first quarter came from a Taylor Johnson three-pointer. Johnson, a freshman, finished the night leading the team with 11 points.
The second quarter saw Aledo score only nine points. The only other Bearcats scoring in the first half besides Johnson were Pierce Gentry with two and a basket by Todd Christian. On a night when Aledo honored the seniors, they were shut out in the first half. The Bearcats went into halftime down by 18, 30-12.
Bearcats 51 Birdville 55
Coming into Friday night’s contest against the Birdville Hawks, Aledo was tied for third place in the district. A win by the Bearcats would have given the Bearcats the tie-breaker edge over Birdville for a playoff spot. The Hawks took advantage of their home court to win 55-51 and just about eliminate Aledo from the playoffs.
Aledo fell behind early as Birdville made five three-pointers and led by ten after the first quarter. The Aledo defense kicked in and only allowed the Hawks 14 points in the second and third quarters. On the offensive end, Danny Glass was on fire all night finishing with 21 points.
Bearcats Still in Third Place in District Despite Loss
Ladycats 80 Azle 38
The Aledo Ladycats clinched the District Championship long ago, but they will have to wait to find out their playoff match-ups. The Bearcats buried 17 three-pointers by eight different Ladycats and played another game with suffocating defense to defeat the Azle Lady Hornets 80-38.
The Ladycats were struggling offensively at the beginning of the game. Alana Martin stole the ball and made a lay-up to put Aledo up by four with 4:35 to play in the first quarter. The basket started a 13-0 run buy the Ladycats and they never looked back. Logan Mittie led all scorers with 22 and Mallory Powell added 20.
Ladycats 85 Byron Nelson 23
The Aledo Ladycats ran their season record to 27-2 and their district mark to a perfect 12-0. It was the defense fueling the offense again as the Ladycats allowed only two points to the Bobcats in the first and fourth quarters combined.
Six different Ladycats made three pointers as the team buried ten three’s for the game. Logan Mittie scored 24, Alana Martin added 21 and Mallory Powell added 16. The 21 points for Martin were her season high.
The Ladycats meet the Azle Hornets tonight at home. The game begins at 6 p.m. Aledo will close out their district season at Boswell High School on Wednesday.
Bi-district games begin Monday, Feb. 14 at a time and site to be determined.
