Former Aledo pitcher Whitney Canion pitched a shutout (a no-hitter through 6.2 innings) to lead Baylor to its fourth regional title with a 1-0 win over East Carolina yesterday in College Park, MD. The shutout marked Canion's 27th consecutive inning of shutout pitching.

Travis Harsch/Special to The Community News: Shea Paul Wood makes his approach during the state 4A track meet held at the University of Texas in Austin. Wood cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to tie for eighth place. Teammate Johnathan Gray finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.90.

The Aledo Bearcats scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and tie the final game of the Area Championship game this afternoon, but Burleson tacked another run in the bottom of the inning to win 7-6.

The Aledo Bearcats evened their three game series against the Burleson Elks with a 5-1 win Friday night, setting up an Area Championship showdown Saturday at 1 p.m. at Southwest High School in Fort Worth.
While the Bearcats lived to fight another day, the young Aledo Ladycats softball team saw their season come to an end as Burleson won 4-1 to take the series 2-0 in the Regional Quarterfinal.

Burleson led Aledo 5-0 after one inning in the first game of the Area Championship playoff tonight..
Aledo scored a run in the top of the second when Caleb Frysinger drove in Zack Scott to make the score Burleson 5, Aledo 1. The Elks scored two more runs in the bottom of the second. Aledo brought in Andrew Whisnand to pitch. Burleson scored two more, making it 9-1 after two innings.
Aledo added an unearned run in the top of the third, but left the bases loaded. Burleson 9, Aledo 2 in the middle of the third. The Elks added three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly. After three, Burleson 12, Aledo 2.
Burleson led Aledo 4-0 after one inning in the softball Regional quarterfinal. The runs came on a three-run home run by Burleson pitcher Sam Montes and a two-out RBI double.
Aledo shortstop Lauren Durham was left stranded on third base after the top of the second. The score remained 4-0. Burleson added three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-0 lead.
Tori Gore walked to lead off the third, but Burleson's Montes retired the next three batters to leave the score 7-0 in favor of Burleson after the top of the third. Burleson scored three more in the bottom of the third to lead 10-0.
Gore came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth. She retired the side, but Aledo needed a score in the top of the fifth to stay in the game.
Sources in Burleson had reported a possibility of postponing tonight's baseball playoff. However, field conditions have been determined to be dry enough for the start of the three-game series between Aledo and Burleson.

The Aledo High School golf team finished in fifth place at the state tournament today according to unofficial results.
Over the two-day tournament, Aledo golfers shot 316-312=628. The tournament winner was Austin Lake Travis (302-294=596) followed by Highland Park (307-296=603), Wolfforth Frenship (312-310=622) and Montgomery Purple (313-309=622).
Individually, Aledo's Jeffrey Merrell finished in eighth pace overall (74-77=151). Teammate Brandon Wilkins was tied for 17th (80-76=156). Logan Lambert finished tied for 28th (80-80=160). Riley Shryock finished 43rd (89-79=168) and Trevor RIce was 46th (82-92=174).
Bearcat Alex Bransom and Ladycat Stephanie Neeley will play in senior all-star soccer games this Saturday in Georgetown.
They were picked to play in the 2011 Senior All Star Showcase against the best 4A seniors in the stateBy the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO).
"We meet our teammates and coaches and have some honorary meal and play a game," Bransom said.
The Aledo Bearcats varsity baseball team will face Burleson in the Area Championship in a three-game series. Game times are:
