Varsity volleyball team defeats nemesis to remain undefeated in district

The Aledo Ladycats remained unbeaten in district play Friday night by defeating main rival Byron Nelson at Aledo High School. The Ladycats previously defeated the Bobcats at Byron Nelson during the first half of district.
Friday's scores were 25-18, 25-12, 25-16.

The opening kickoff from Byron Nelson went through the west end zone and Aledo took over on their 20-yard line.
Following a seven-yard pass to Willie Gibson on first down, Johnathan Gray went 73 yards for the first score in the game. The Nevarez PAT was good and Aledo led 7-0.
Byron Nelson made three quick first downs on their first six plays to the Aledo 38. The Bearcats held on third down to force a fourth-and-three at the 31. Shea Wood broke up a pass and Aledo took over on downs.
A Gray carry for 22 yards followed by a Matt Bishop keeper, then Bishop for 25 more. Michael Mann caught a 15-yard reception. Two Gray carries later, the second for a touchdown, a PAT is good and it's Aledo 14, Byron Nelson 0 with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter.
Two first downs then a long scoring pass from quarterback Andrew Mitchell to Dezmon Gassaway got Byron Nelson on the scoreboard, 14-7 Aledo.
Aledo started at their own 20 after another deep kick and touchback. A 20-yard completion from Bishop to Mann and a Johnathan Gray nine-yard run took us to the end of the quarter.
Aledo was held and had to punt to Nelson, who took the ball at their 20-yard line. Aledo's Jonny Carter took an interception back to the Byron Nelson 15-yard line.
After a penalty backed the Bearcats up to the 20-yard line, a flair pass to Johnathan Gray turned into a 20-yard score. Devan Watts ran left and made it into the end zone on a broken play, for the two-point conversion, making it 22-7 Aledo.
The Aledo Ladycats will face their main district nemesis, Byron Nelson, in volleyball on Friday. Local sports fans are encouraged to go to the game and support their local team prior to the Aledo-Byron Nelson football game. JV action begins at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game starts at 6:30 p.m. in the AHS gym. Freshman games will also be played at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the practice gym.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, Aledo ISD will provide shuttles for the Bearcat Homecoming football game. Due to expected overflow traffic, buses will run between Willow Park Baptist Church and Bearcat Stadium; between Aledo United Methodist Church and Bearcat Stadium; and between Aledo Middle School and Bearcat Stadium.
Willow Park Baptist Church is located at 129 S. Ranch House Road in Willow Park; Aledo United Methodist Church is at 313 Pecan St. in Aledo and Aledo Middle School is at 416 FM 1187 South.
