WC College jazz band to perform

November 12, 2014 by Phil Major

Event Date:
Thu, 11/20/2014 - 7:30pm

Jazz finds itself between “rock” and “hard bop” in the fall concert by the Weatherford College Jazz Band Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alkek Fine Arts Center.
The program will include jazz compositions representing jazz rock and hard bop, as well as the more traditional jazz swing style. While jazz rock enjoyed a relatively short period of popularity from the late 1960s through the mid-70s, hard bop proved more durable in its sustainability.
Jazz rock came into its own with the success of recordings by bands such as Blood, Sweat & Tears, whose 1969 hit "Spinning Wheel" will be performed by the WC Jazz Band.

College choir sets performance

November 10, 2014 by Phil Major

Event Date:
Tue, 11/18/2014 - 7:30pm

The Weatherford College choir will perform its fall concert, Love Songs: Human and Holy, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. Choir director Rob Laney said the concert is the choir’s most ambitious yet.
“It is full of poetic language, sweeping emotion and transcending entertainment,” Laney said. “The main work in the concert is a setting by contemporary composer John Corigliano of the Dylan Thomas poem Fern Hill which frames the biblical creation story in a warm agrarian setting. With some creative staging by the choir, this piece is not to be missed.”
The concert also showcases tunes from Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Norway and is rounded out with songs by Mendelssohn, Brahms and Lennon/McCartney.

Coyote Chase - Weatherford College

January 10, 2014 by Phil Major

Event Date:
Sat, 01/18/2014 - 8:00am

Extreme cold and ice put a damper on Weatherford College’s Coyote Chase Race, originally scheduled in late November. But it’s on again now, rain or shine.
Rescheduled, the race will now take place Saturday, Jan. 18, at WC. The 5K and 1-mile run is a fundraiser for Weatherford College Foundation scholarships.
All ages and fitness levels are welcome to walk or run. Those registered for the November race are still registered and encouraged to come participate.
“We’re especially wanting all those kids and parents and friends registered in the School Challenge to come on down,” said Linda Bagwell, coordinating assistant for the event. “Most already have their t-shirts and goodie bags, and we have more, if there are others not previously registered! It’s a fun day, and big trophies are awarded to the schools that bring in the most runners and demonstrate their school spirit.” Every kid gets a ribbon just for participating.
All runners will receive T-shirts and goodies, and trophies will be awarded in gender and age categories.
The 1-mile starts at 9 a.m., and the 5K starts at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $20 for adults before the race (through Jan. 16) and $25 on race day. Kids 12 and under are $15, no matter when they register. On-line registration, a route map, and other information can be found at

Event Date:
Sat, 11/23/2013 - 9:00am

Weatherford College officials are gearing up for another Coyote Chase Race Saturday, Nov. 23, and it’s a big one – the 20th anniversary of the popular 5K and 1-mile timed race. The Weatherford College Foundation hosts the race as a fundraiser for its scholarship program.
This year’s race will impact even more college students with scholarships, since every dollar raised will be matched by a Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Elementary schools are invited to participate in the annual “School Challenge” and are encouraged to bring as many students, family members, teachers and friends to compete for trophies and recognition. The school bringing the most runners will win a large trophy and bragging rights for the next year.
“It’s a tradition for many of our area runners, especially the elementary schools, to run the Coyote Chase Race,” said Brent Baker, race director. “We have runners of all ages competing, and we always have a good time.”
Online registration is available at RunTime Racing Services will handle the event’s timing and course layout.
First Financial Bank will provide trophies for overall finishers, medals for the top three finishers in more than 40 age categories, and ribbons for all children 12 and under. All runners will receive a Coyote Chase Race T-shirt and other goodies.
Registration is $20 per runner through Nov. 22; race day registration is $25. Children 12 and under are $15, no matter when they register. The 1-mile run will begin at 9 a.m., and the 5K will start at 9:30 a.m.
