CASA’s (Court Appointed Special Advocates) 8th Annual Breakfast with Santa will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. and 10-11:15 a.m. (two serving times) on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Central Christian Church at 1602 South Main Street, Weatherford. The event consists of a picture with Santa to take home, goodie bags, crafts, face painting, story time, hayrides, and breakfast. Local high school art students will help us again with face painting and CASA board members, volunteers, friends, and community leaders will be cooking, serving, decorating and even cleaning up. Tickets will be distributed to CASA children, Freedom House, Center of Hope and others. Community families are encouraged to purchase $5 tickets for children (parents are free) and take part in this fun event while supporting CASA. More than 14,000 individuals from Fort Worth, Tarrant County and all over the country will converge on Camp Bowie Boulevard on Thursday, Nov. 28 – Thanksgiving morning – for the 32nd annual Mortiz Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trot presented by Total Building Maintenance.
The Turkey Trot features a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and the Central Market 1K Gobbler Trot for kids and families. Proceeds from the Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trot benefit the scholarship/youth program of the Westside YMCA. Persons who wish to utilize the services of the Y, but cannot afford them, are given assistance based on their needs. This allows the YMCA to say "Yes!" to those who otherwise would not be able to participate.
All races start in front of Frost Bank at 6115 Camp Bowie at Westridge, with the Gobbler Trot kicking things off at 8:00 a.m. The 10 K follows at 8:15 and the 5K begins shortly afterwards at 8:30. All races end at Sunset and Westridge. Course maps for all three races can be found online at www.fwtrot.org.
Turkey Trot has become a time that many people in the area look forward to as an opportunity to connect with family and friends on the Thanksgiving holiday. Longtime Trot participant Olivia Estrella says, “My family does the Turkey Trot. One son, three daughters, one daughter-in-law and me. We look forward to it and it has become a family tradition. We love it!”
Canyon West Clubhouse Weatherford Christian School will host its 10th Annual Faith Promise Dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. First National Bank President Lin Bearden will emcee the evening. Copper Creek Restaurant will cater and minister, author and inspirational speaker Don Piper will deliver the keynote address. Last year’s event raised over $120,000 of which enables the school to keep non-denominational Christian education affordable for families in Parker County. Mr. Piper is best known for his New York Times bestselling book 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life. The book tells Don’s personal story of how he was killed in a horrific car crash in 1989 but through the power of prayer by another minister for 90 minutes he was actually given a second chance at life. He would spend the next 13 months and 34 major surgeries, including some never before attempted in the United States, trying to regain the life he once knew. Mr. Piper has shared his story of hope and healing across the globe including to audiences from NBC’s Today Show, Dateline NBC, ABC’s Nightline, FOX Network’s Sean Hannity’s America and The O’Reilly Factor.

Parkinson's Support Group of Tarrant County Kick-Off luncheon, provided by TEVA Pharmaceuticals, will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at the Broadway Baptist Church, Third Floor, 305 W. Indian Pow WowGrand Prairie, TX (August 19, 2013) – A 2-1/2 day Native American Pow Wow with colorful tribal dance contests, an arts & crafts show, teepees, visiting with old friends, making new ones, honoring ceremonies, singing and much more will be part of the 51st Annual National Championship Indian Pow Wow. The event will take place at Traders Village, in Grand Prairie, Friday - Sunday, September 6th, 7th & 8th. The contests will take place on Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, on Saturday from 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. - 12:00 midnight and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Indian Dance Arena on the west side of the market and is presented by the DFW Inter-Tribal Association.
Several hundred Native Americans, representing dozens of tribes from across the United States, will take part in this celebration of their culture and heritage. The drums will beat for the dancers in full regalia of feathers, buckskin, bells and beadwork competing for prize money and awards in eighteen different dance categories. Spectators will be amazed by the precision and showmanship that even the youngest competitors display in their dancing. Participants will range in age from two-year old toddlers to grandmothers in there 80’s.
Artists, craftsmen and traders from all over the country will showcase their wares and talents at the Arts & Crafts Show and Sale, under the giant Green Expo building, from10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day.
The Girl Scouts of Parker County, Peach Blossom Prairie Service Unit is holding an open Girl Scout Information Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thurs. Sept. 12 at the Aledo United Methodist Church at Oak and Pecan Streets. Coder and McCall Elementary School boys and their parents are invited to a Scout Rally to learn about scouting and Pack 1099 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Willow Park. Regular meetings are at 6:30 p.m. Mondays starting Sept. 9 throughout most of the school year.
