To help people learn more about career changes, AARP Texas is hosting a Life Reimagined career transition expo at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 4:30-8:30 p.m..
The free expo is designed to help those who want to change professions to follow a passion, turn their hobby into a business or simply challenge themselves with something new. Experts and leaders will be on hand to counsel and educate attendees interested in switching careers. It will also be a useful event for those whose career search has stalled, and for members of the military transitioning to civilian life.
The career transition expo is a Life Reimagined offering from AARP, providing a network of people, tools and information to help navigate life's transitions. Experts and leaders will be on hand to help participants shift gears and get started on a new journey.
The event will entail resume critiques, dress-for-success consultations, fitness and wellness guidance, and a variety of other help from career resource experts.

Messiah Lutheran Church, Weatherford, will host a drawing for a vintage “Cathedral Window” quilt at its Mission Fest Oct. 11 at the church. Proceeds from ticket sales and the dinner (freewill offering) will go to benefit aid to Ebola virus-affected communities in Sierra Leone.

October 10-12 marks the date of the Greenwood Farm, Inc. Fall Horse Trials. This is a nationally-recognized horse triathlon consists of dressage, show jumping, and cross-country jumping tests for each horse and rider combination. The event takes place at 2100 Greenwood Rd., Weatherford. Spectators are welcome free of charge, and food and specialty vendors will be on grounds. Chili’s in Weatherford will hold a Casa Hope for Children Give Back Event Thursday, Sept. 4 from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Chili’s will donate 10 percent of the event day sales. Present the attached flyer. Chili’s is at 128 E. Interstate 20.
A lemonade stand set up in front of Aledo Athletic Club Friday, Aug. 29 will raise funds for the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation.
The stand will open at 2:30 p.m. at 601 S. FM 1187 in the parking lot.
It is being hosted by David and Jennifer Starkey of Aledo, whose daughter Ella, a student at Vandagriff Elementary, was born with the syndrome.
There are only about 1,000 cases known worldwide. The syndrome is the result of a chromosome deficiency that affects children differently.
It is the mission of the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation to improve the quality of life of people affected by PMS worldwide by providing family support, accelerating research and raising awareness, according to its website.
The Fort Worth Vet Center and the Taylor County Mobile Vet Center will hold a Veterans Information Fair Saturday, Sept. 27 at 538 Maddux Road in Weatherford from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
This event is co-sponsored by the National Vietnam War Museum and Clark Gardens in Weatherford. Information on the event can be found at www.clarkgardens.org or www.nationalvnwarmuseum.org.
Services offered by the Fort Worth Vet Center include:
• Individual, group, and family readjustment counseling to Veterans and their families to facilitate successful transitions from combat to civilian life.
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment and help with other related problems that affect functioning within the family, work, school or other areas of everyday life.
• Military sexual trauma counseling for veterans of both genders, regardless of combat service.
• Veterans and families needing more information should call the Fort Worth Vet Center at (817) 921-9095.
• The Fort Worth Vet Center is located at 6620 Westworth Boulevard, Westworth Village. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8: a.m.-4:30 p.m. with extended hours available upon request Tuesday – Thursday from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Vet Center staff respect the privacy of all clients and hold information in strictest confidence. No information will be communicated to any person or agency without written consent, except in necessary circumstances to avert a crisis.
The monthly meeting of the Volunteer Musicians of Parker County is at 6:30 pm Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Weatherford Senior Center. Meet other musicians, learn what is going on in the community and break out in jam sessions. The meetings are always the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. All music and musicians are welcome; bring instruments. Free to all to attend.

A fundraiser benefitting Parker County Court Appointed Special Advocates is planned Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church, 910 N. Main St. in Weatherford.

State Rep. Phil King of Weatherford will host a Town Hall to discuss important water and transportation issues facing Texas. Featured guests will include Director Kathleen Jackson of the Texas Water Development Board and Commissioner Victor Vandergriff from the Texas Department of Transportation.
It will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6-8 p.m. at Weatherford College Wise County Campus Lecture Hall.
Jackson will discuss the role of the Texas Water Development Board and the need to develop a wide range of solutions, promising technologies and collaborative partnerships to meet current and future water needs. These ongoing efforts help ensure Texas maintains a healthy and vibrant economy. TWDB is actively engaged in a new level of public and community outreach across the state to address the common goal, which is to develop water for Texas. Jackson will highlight policies and procedures that have changed at the agency since the passage of House Bill 4 and will provide an update on implementing the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas.
Vandergriff is a member of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Dept. of Transportation. He was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry March 26, 2013, and took his seat on the commission April 30, 2013.
Vandergriff is an attorney and private businessman specializing in business development and legislative issues.
