Ladycats suffer first district loss in overtime
The Aledo Bearcats rebounded from a six-point halftime deficit with 49 second-half points on their way to a convincing 84-71 victory over Saginaw Tuesday night in District 6-4A hoop action at Saginaw.
The win lifts the Bearcats to a 1-3 record in 6-4A, while Saginaw drops to 1-3.
Aledo senior guard Ryan Talley recorded a double double with a game-high 32 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Shane Smith also had eye-opening game with 22 points and and five boards.
Also scoring for the Bearcats were Danny Glass with 11 points, Dillon Hawkins with eight, Matt Barron with five, Dillon Huerta with four and Blake Reynolds with two.
Saginaw 75, Ladycats 70 OT
The Aledo Ladycats trailed by 15 points with seven minutes left to play before rallying with 23 fourth-quarter points at Saginaw in District 6-4 action Tuesday to force overtime.
However, Saginaw outscored AHS 15-10 in the extra session to claim the win.
The loss - the Ladycats first in league play - drops Aledo to 5-1 in district play as Saginaw moves to 5-1.
As reported in the Jan. 8 issue of The Community News and on this site, the Aledo High School basketball teams will play at Saginaw today (Tuesday, Jan. 12) in District 6-4A action.
The original schedule had the Ladycats and Bearcats at home today against the Rough Riders, but a scheduling conflict at Saginaw on Feb. 5, the original date of AHS teams traveling to Saginaw, has resulted in a switch in the schedule.
The Ladycats will face the Lady Riders at 6 p.m. today at the Saginaw High School gym followed by the boys' contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The first-place Ladycats will take a 5-0 record into the contest with 4-1 Saginaw, while the Bearcats (0-3) are seeking their first league win.
The Aledo Bearcats Booster Club is pleased to announce that planned festivities for Championship Weekend in Aledo have now been finalized.
One day after the previously-announced championship parade, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 15, the annual Aledo Football Banquet and Auction has been scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Masonic Lodge in Fort Worth.
The Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be legendary radio personality Hal Jay of NewsTalk 820 WBAP.
Tickets - priced $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under - go on sale beginning today in the AISD Administration Building.

Aledo sophomore running back Johnathan Gray, who rushed for 252 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Bearcats' 35-21 victory over Brenham in the Class 4A Division II state championship game, has been selected as National Sophomore of the Year by MaxPreps, a cbssports.com Web site focusing on high school sports.
Gray finished the 2009 state-championship campaign with 2,814 yards and 50 TDs in 16 games. He also added 457 yards on 29 receptions with eight TDs.
Gray won the award over finalists Hopewell (Aliquippa, Pa.) running back Rushel Shell, Kenton (Ohio) quarterback Maty Mauk, and Hillcrest (Springfield, Mo.) wide receiver Dorial Green.
Other Texans making the MaxPreps national all-sophomore first team include Hiva Lutui, a 6-3, 275-pound offensive lineman from Euless Trinity, LaDarrell McNeil, a 6-2, 200-pound defensive back from Dallas A. Maceo Smith, and Cayleb Jones, a 6-3, 185-pound wide receiver from Austin High School.
Gray has rushed for nearly 4,000 yards in his two years at AHS.
Azle runs past Bearcats in nightcap
Showing balanced scoring with four ladies in double figures, the Aledo Ladycats moved to 5-0 in District 6-4A action after a convincing 61-44 victory over Azle Friday night at Azle.
The win - the Ladycats 12th in a row - keeps the Aledo ladies in a first-place tie with rival Springtown and elevates the Ladycats overall mark to 17-5.
Aledo senior post Tara Gough recorded a double double with a team-leading 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Logan Mittie and freshman wing Mallory Powell each registered 12 points, with sophomore guard Alanna Martin adding 10.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were sophomore wing Caileen Tallant with seven points and junior guard Shelby Stockard with four.
Azle 66, Bearcats 33
Azle remained unbeaten in boys 6-4A action after a 66-33 victory over the Aledo Bearcats Friday night at Azle.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 0-3 in district play.
Danny Glass led the Bearcats with 11 points. Also scoring were Ryan Talley with six points, Robbie Spreier and Shane Smith, each with five, Mike Wilson with four, and Dillon Hawkins and Bragen Frank, each with one.
Boswell keeps Bearcats winless in district with late comeback win
Fourth-quarter performances determined the outcome of both the Aledo Ladycats and Bearcats basketball games Tuesday night in District 6-4A action at Boswell.
The Ladycats went on a 17-6 run in the final period to come away with a 43-25 victory over the Lady Pioneers. The Aledo ladies went 19 for 22 at the free throw line, including an 11-for-12 effort in the fourth quarter.
In the boys' game, Boswell came back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter and outscored the Bearcats 18-12 in the final period to slip past Aledo, 56-54.
The Bearcats missed three shots from the lane and their last six free throws in the final quarter and fell to 0-2.
The win elevates the Ladycats to 4-0 as AHS is in a first-place tie with Springtown in District 6-4A.
Logan Mittie led the Ladycats with 13 points, with Alanna Martin adding eight. Also scoring for the Ladycats were Mallory Powell and Caileen Tallant, each with seven points, Tara Gough and Shelby Stockard, each with three, and Melissa Howell with two.

Bearcats fall 53-50 in league opener to Bears
Saturday marked the opening of District 6-4A basketball doubleheaders as the Aledo High School hoop teams hosted Brewer, with AHS coming away with a split.
Aledo junior guard Logan Mittie scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Ladycats to an 82-51 victory over the Lady Bears as the AHS ladies raised their league mark to a perfect 3-0.
The Aledo Bearcats followed the ladies in the boys' district opener against Brewer, falling 53-50 to the Bears as a late AHS comeback fell just short.
Both teams will continue district play on Tuesday (Jan. 5) at Boswell. The girls' game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys' contest at 7:30 p.m.
The Ladycats jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first period as Mittie set the pace with 11 points.
On the strength of two three-pointers and five additional field goals, Mittie scored 17 of the Ladycats' 26 points in the second quarter as Aledo took a 46-23 lead at the break.
Junior guard Logan Mittie scored 21 points to lead the Aledo Ladycats to a 52-32 victory over Keller Central this afternoon (Thursday, Dec. 31) at Keller Central in AHS' final non-district game.
The win - the Ladycats ninth in a row - elevates AHS' overall mark to 14-5.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Melissa Howell with eight points, Mallory Powell and Shelby Stockard, each with seven, Tara Gough with four, Caileen Tallant with three and Sarah Hawkins with two.
The Ladycats led 15-5 after the opening period and built a 28-16 cushion at the half. Aledo outscored Central 15-5 in the third period to take a 43-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Ladycats (2-0 in District 6-4A) and Bearcats will host Brewer in 6-4A contests on Saturday, Jan. 2. The girls game will tip off at 3:30 p.m. at the AHS gym followed by the boys contest at approximately 5 p.m.

Ladycats make up non-district game at Keller Central at noon Thursday
The Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats basketball teams will host Brewer on Saturday, Jan. 2, in District 6-4A action.
The Ladycats - 2-0 in district play - will tip off at 3:30 p.m. at the AHS gym, while the Bearcats, in the boys' 6-4A opener, will follow at approximately 5 p.m.
On Thursday (Dec. 31), the Ladycats will conclude non-district play at noon at Keller Central.
