Ladycats to face Birdville in area round in rare home soccer playoff match

Coming off a 5-1 victory last week over Western Hills in the opening round of the Class 5A soccer playoffs, the Aledo Ladycats will hope to continue their playoff run when they face the Birdville Lady Hawks on Friday, April 3 in a rare home playoff match.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.

Tarleton State University holds pro day at Aledo High School indoor facility

A scout for the Carolina Panthers works out several Tarleton State University and Midwestern State University football players Wednesday morning at the Aledo High School indoor facility. TSU invited Midwestern players to the workout session. TSU decided to hold its pro day in Aledo as many NFL scouts are in the area this week for pro days on the campuses of TCU and SMU. Scouts from the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams and other NFL teams were working out players at the facility.

Since its inception in 2003, the Moritz Ride for Heroes bicycle ride has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local first responders, law enforcement and school organizations. One of the things the community always gives back are cookies!

The Ride for Heroes needs about 200 dozen cookies for this year’s event. Favorites are chocolate chip and oatmeal.

Ladycats, Bearcats stay perfect in District 8-5A after run-rule wins

Aledo center fielder Mary Myers makes solid contact Monday during the Ladycats' 13-1 win at Cleburne.

Aledo catcher Alli Ramsey swatted a home run and two triples while driving in five runs to lead the state-ranked No. 1 Ladycats to a 13-1 win over Cleburne Monday in a District 8-5A game at Cleburne.

The win – at the halfway point of district softball play – raises the Ladycats’ league record to a sparkling 7-0.

Riley Sartain also smashed a homer and added a triple, and also collecting a pair of hits were Rhylie Makawe (double, single) and Kayden Kirkpatrick (two singles).

Lauren Craine (7-0) earned the win in the circle for Aledo.

Ladycats, Bearcats on road today in respective District 8-5A contests

Both the Aledo Ladycats softball team and Bearcats baseball team will take to the road today in respective District 8-5A contests.

The Ladycats will play at 5 p.m. today at Cleburne.

Aledo, in first place in 8-5A, brings a 6-0 league record into the contest, while Cleburne is 2-4 in district play.

The Bearcats will travel to Burleson today to face the Elks. The first pitch will be at 7 p.m.

The Bearcats, all alone at the top of the 8-5A standings, comes into the game with a 4-0 district mark, while Burleson stands at 1-3 in league play.

Former Ladycats pitcher Whitney Canion has number retired by Baylor today at ceremony

Former Aledo Ladycats state-championship winning pitcher Whitney Canion is surrounded by the 2015 Baylor Lady Bears today prior to Baylor's home softball game against Oklahoma State. Canion, who was a two-time All-American at Baylor, had her No. 11 jersey retired in a pre-game ceremony. It is the first jersey ever retired by the Baylor softball program, and Canion is the first former Aledo athlete to have a number retired at a major university. Look for the April 3 issue of The Community News for more photos of the ceremony and Canion's thoughts on her special day.

Bearcats stay in first place with 3-2 over Crowley; No. 1 Ladycats crush Granbury, 17-0

Aledo senior third baseman Garrett Uhl lines a single in the third inning of the Bearcats' 3-2 win over Crowley Friday night at the AHS baseball field. The win raises the first-place Bearcats' record to 4-0 in District 8-5A.

Aledo starting pitcher Isaac Hale pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to lead the Bearcats to a 3-2 victory over Crowley Friday night in a District 8-5A contest at the AHS baseball field.

The win keeps the Bearcats alone in first place with a 4-0 district mark, while the loss evens Crowley's record to 2-2.

First-place Bearcats host Crowley in key 8-5A game; No. 1 Ladycats at home against Granbury

Fans of Aledo High School diamond sports will have two choices today as both the Bearcats baseball team and the Ladycats softball team will play host in District 8-5A action at the AHS sports complex.

The state-ranked No. 1 Ladycats will bring a 5-0 district mark into the contest against 1-4 Granbury. The first pitched is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The 3-0 Bearcats will take on 2-1 Crowley as Aledo tries to stay on top of the 8-5A standings.

The first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

Makeup event set for Cowtown 5K

A makeup 5K event for Aledo Bearcat Runners Club student members who did not get to participate in the Cowtown Marathon will be held Thursday, April 2 from 3-5 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.
Most of the marathon’s series of races had to be canceled due to inclement weather March 1.
Kids can earn their Cowtown finishers’ medal by completing 12 laps at the stadium track any time between 3-5. It will not be a race but a come-and-go event organized by Coder Elementary PE teacher Becky Shaunfield.
The Cowtown Marathon will bring its inflatable finish line and a water station, and possibly some snacks.
Any child younger than 18 can receive their finisher’s medal. Wear the orange runners club shirt and the blue Cowtown bib and walk or run the 12 laps.
