This morning, the University Interscholastic League released information regarding reclassification and redistricting, including what districts in Class 5A Aledo High School will compete in during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years.
In football, which beginning this year in Class 5A is in separate districts, Aledo High School, with an enrollment of 1,738 students, has been placed in District 5-5A, Division II with Burleson, Burleson Centennial, Arlington Seguin, Cleburne, Everman, Joshua, Midlothian and Waco University. District 5 will be in Region II.
In volleyball and basketball, Aledo High School will compete in District 4-5A with Abilene Cooper, Abilene Wylie, Granbury, Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls Rider. District 4 will be in Region I.
Every two years the UIL sets new conference cut off numbers and classifies each of its schools into six classifications, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A – with 1A the smallest enrollment numbers and 6A the largest - and also redraws districts within each classification for athletic competition.
The new alignments, established by enrollment figures submitted to the UIL by its member schools in October, will serve as the football and non-football sports districts for the next two school years.
A new element has been added to this cycle as Class 5A schools will be split into Division I (big schools) and Division II (small schools) football districts similar to classes 1A-4A. In the past in football, 5A schools were split into big school/small school brackets for the playoffs after the regular season.
In lieu of Aledo being placed in an nine-team district in football, head coach Steve Wood has announced the Bearcats’ non-district opponents for the 2018 season. Aledo will open the season at Denton Guyer on Friday, Aug. 31.
On Saturday, Sept. 8 the Bearcats will travel to Shreveport and play Bentonville (Arkansas) High School as part of the Bayou Border Battle. Aledo will repeat this trip in ’19 but play a different opponent.
Although the UIL has set basketball and volleyball districts now, the spring sports’ districts are normally the same. The remaining athletic district alignments will be released no later than March 16.
