Neuman throws one-hitter to lead Grapevine over Bearcats in lightning-delayed playoff opener

Posted

Grapevine pitcher Connor Neuman allowed only one hit and retired every batter he faced after a lightning delay to lead the Mustangs to a 2-0 win over the Aledo Bearcats Thursday night in the opening game of a Class 5A best-of-three regional quarterfinals series at Brewer High School.

Game two is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brewer.

Thursday night's game was delayed an hour and 10 minutes due to lightning in the area. The Bearcats were trailing 2-0 and had a runner on first base with one out when the game resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning.

But Neuman struck out two batters to get out of the inning, and in the sixth and seventh innings sent down every batter he faced. After the delay, Nueuman struck out seven of the eight Aledo batters he faced. For the game, the senior struck out 10 and walked two to earn the win.

The lone Aledo hit was a single by Calloway Shands in the fourth frame.

Grapevine, which left 12 runners stranded on base for the game, scored twice in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an error and a walk while swatting three singles.

Steven Swift was the starting pitcher for Aledo. He allowed two runs - but only one earned - on four hits with three walks and a hit batter in 4-1/3 innings. Relief pitcher Briley Rodriguez pitched to three batters and allowed two hits and a walk, and reliever Trevor Stone pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

If the Bearcats win on Friday, a third and series-deciding game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brewer High School.
