Grapevine scored three runs in the top of the second inning and never trailed from that point as the Mustangs held on to defeat the Aledo Bearcats, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Game 3 of a Class 5A best-of-3 regional quarterfinal series at Brewer High School.

The win advances Grapevine to the regional semifinals where they will face the winner of the Amarillo High School/Lubbock Coronado series.

Trever Bruno started on the mound for the Bearcats, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks in 4-2/3 innings. Trevor Stone came on in relief, allowing a run on one hit with two strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings.

Boone Montgomery was the winning pitcher for Grapevine. Montgomery allowed a run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings. Relief pitcher Chan McClure pitched one scoreless inning to collect the save.

Grapevine scored three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

But the Bearcats got two of the runs back in the bottom of the second when Gehrig Mosiello lined a base hit to drive in Garrison Berkley and Vaughn Shields to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 3-2. Berkley reached on a base hit and Shields reached on an error.

Grapevine, last year’s state champion, added a run in the fifth inning on a two-out base hit to extend its lead to 4-2.

The Mustangs added another run in the seventh to increase its lead to 5-2. London Green led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Connor Neuman.

The Bearcats got two runners on base in the seventh inning to bring the tying run to the plate, but McClure induced a fly out to end the game.
