Ladycats come back to topple Azle, 5-3

Posted

Lindsey McElroy smashed a home run and Mykayla Stroud added a pair of extra-base hits to lead the Aledo Ladycats to a 5-3 victory over Azle Monday night in a District 6-5A softball game at Aledo.

With the Ladycats trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, McElroy led off with a solo homer that not only cut the Lady Hornets' lead to 3-2, but sparked the Aledo bats.

Stroud followed with a triple, and she scored two batters later to tie the game at 3-3 after a double by Hannah Andrews. Aledo was not finished, and after courtesy runner Jesse Kubosh advanced to third on a passed ball, she scored later on a wild pitch to give the Ladycats a 4-3 lead.

With two outs and Bailee Whitener at third base (she had reached on a walk), second baseman Sydney Marris advanced to first base on a dropped third strike that rolled to the backstop which allowed Whitener to score from third for a 5-3 lead.

Azle had the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning, but starting pitcher Andrews got out of the jam. She handled a ground ball and threw to catcher Macy Hale at home plate for a force out for the first out of the frame. The next batter hit a line shot back to the circle, but Andrews caught the ball for the second out and quickly threw to Whitener at third base to complete the double play that ended the game.

Andrews was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on six hits with six walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

The Ladycats will continue district play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eaton High School.
