Bearcats swat 11 hits, score four late runs in 9-5 victory over Eaton

Aledo swatted 11 hits, including six in the last two innings, as the Bearcats outlasted the Eaton Eagles 9-5, Thursday night in a District 6-5A baseball game at Eaton High School.

The win keeps the Bearcats in at least a tie for first place in 6-5A with a 2-0 record.

Trevor Stone recorded the win in relief, while closer Trevor Brossette earned the save by striking out all four batters he faced, including all three in the seventh. Steven Swift was the starting pitcher, and he gave way to Stone with the Bearcats leading 5-3 in the third.

Aledo took a 5-4 lead into the top of the sixth inning. Gehrig Mosiello reached on an error with one out, and he was replaced at second base by courtesy runner Vaughn Shields. The next batter, Garrison Berkley - who drove in two runs with a double in the third inning - was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.

Hunter Rosson followed with a base hit to load the bases, but Eaton got the next batter out as Aledo had the bases loaded with two outs. Jacob Arizpe proved to be a clutch hitter when he ripped a single to drive in Shields and Berkley to extend the Bearcats' lead to 7-4.

Eaton scratched for a run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a walk followed by a double to cut the Aledo lead to 7-5.

The 'Cats put up two more runs in the seventh. Nathen Fingar led of with an infield hit and advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Jake McLendon. The next batter, Caden Jarvis, singled to bring in Fingar for an 8-5 advantage. Two batters later, Berkley registered his third RBI of the game on a double that plated Jarvis for a 9-5 lead.

Brossette finished off the Eagles by striking out the side in order in the seventh.

The Bearcats will continue district play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Brewer.
