District champs! TCA Eagles fly past FW Calvary, 55-36, in first-place tiebreaker game

Posted

Trinity Christian Academy exploded for 38 second-half points as the Eagles flew past Fort Worth Calvary Christian, 55-36, Saturday afternoon in a TAPPS District 2-3A first-place tiebreaker game at Lake Country Christian School.

The win gives the Eagles the top seed in the district and a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. The two teams split the district series with TCA winning the first game by five points but dropping last week's rematch by a single point.

But on Saturday, it was all Eagles as nine different TCA players figured in the scoring, led by Andrew Ludwig with 13 points. Also reaching double figures in scoring was Garrett Green with 12 points.

However, the story of the contest was the smothering Eagles' defense, which held highly-regarded guard Matthew Boatner to just nine points.

"We doubled (Boatner) every time he touched the ball," Eagles head coach Kyle Fields said. "Our guys did a great job of team defense, and they also played unselfishly on offense and shard the ball. This was a great team win."

The Eagles led 9-5 after the first period, built a 17-12 cushion at the half and took a 31-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

Boatner slashed through the lane for a layup midway through the final stanza as FW Calvary cut the Eagles' lead to 42-36, but it was as close as the Conquerors would get.

In the next two minutes the Eagles went on a 13-0 run to seal the game. Jaxson Davis began the run with a three-point basket from the left baseline, and Ludwig followed with a driving layup. Josh Kennerly continued the scoring flurry when he nailed a pull-up jumper from the lane, and Jake Henning got to the free throw line and sank a pair of charity shots to stretch the lead to 51-36.

A pair of free throws by Green followed by a layup off a steal by Davis closed the scoring as the Eagles celebrated their 19-point victory.

Also scoring for the Eagles were Henning with eight points, Davis with seven, Kennerly with six, Mason Hornick with four, Nick Marcantonio with three and Shay Dillin with two.
