Animal control seeking horse’s owner

From the Parker County Sheriff’s Office:

Parker County Animal Control officers are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the owner(s) of an abandoned and injured horse found wandering on a well site on Old Weatherford Road, near FM 3325, Monday morning, Feb. 20, 2017.

Animal Control Supervisor Karen Kessler said the paint mare had a broken right rear leg which had been shattered for at least a month previously to finding her. The mare had open wounds near the fractured leg, which had become seriously infected.

The mare was immediately taken to a local veterinarian, who humanely euthanized the horse due to the severity of her injuries.

Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said the well site gate lock where the mare had been discovered had been cut to make entrance onto the property, passing a cattle guard onto the property.

“Due to the extensive nature of the mare’s injuries, there was no possible way she could have wandered passed a cattle guard and a locked gate,” Kessler said.

Sheriff’s personnel believe the mare was purposely dumped on the site. The mare had evidence of two different topical medications on the superficial wounds.

The mare was approximately 10 to 11 years old with distinctive markings.

“She should be easy to identify by an unusual pattern in the center of her blaze,” Kessler said. “The mare had been very well-groomed. Her body condition showed she was taken care of by someone, and she had been shod within the last two months.”

Kessler added the mare had no brands or tattoos. The Sheriff’s Animal Control officers said the veterinarian scanned the mare for a microchip with no success of locating an owner.

Animal Control officers contacted additional local veterinarians and ferriers in further attempts to identify an owner.

“Given the location we found her at, and the fact that an owner hasn’t been identified yet though social media posts, we believe the mare could possibly have belong to someone in Tarrant County,” Kessler said.

Anyone who recognizes the mare or has information of the possible owner(s) is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Communications Center at (817) 594-3213.
