Aledo junior post Sarah Haeussler scored on a layup with 10 seconds left in the game to propel the Ladycats to a 45-44 victory over Chisholm Trail Tuesday night in the girls' District 6-5A basketball opener at Chisholm Trail High School.
Chisholm Trail guard Alyssa McAfee had just connected on one of two free throws to give the Rangers a 44-43 lead with 26 seconds remaining in the contest. The CTHS guard had gotten to the line when the 6-2 Haeussler was charged with a foul when it appeared the Aledo post had cleanly blocked the shot of the driving, diminutive McAfee.
With one final shot, the Ladycats worked the ball to freshman guard Riley Sale, who found Haeussler underneath the bucket. Haeussler sent down a layup from the left side to give the Ladycats a 45-44 lead with 10 ticks left on the clock.
Chisholm Trail had one last opportunity, but a smothering Ladycats' defense forced an errant shot near the free trow line that fell short of the basket as Aledo held on for the district-opening win.
Freshman guard Taylor Morgan led the Ladycats with 15 points, with Haeussler and freshman post Janessa Payne each adding 14. Guard Hannah Adrion finished with two points to go along with five rebounds. Haeussler led Aledo on the boards with eight rebounds.
