Volleyball Ladycats face Grapevine in regional quarterfinals; basketball Ladycats open season at home

Posted

It is all about the ladies today in Aledo High School sports as the Ladycats volleyball team continues playoff action and the Ladycats basketball team opens the 2016-17 season at home.

The state-ranked No. 10 Aledo Ladycats volleyball team is one step away from qualifying for the regional tournament. That step is today when the Ladycats face Grapevine in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals.

The first serve will be at 7 p.m. today at Fossil Ridge High School in Keller.

The Ladycats (37-8) will be facing a Grapevine squad that is 33-14 and has defeated Trimble Tech and Denton Ryan to reach the regional quarterfinals.

"Grapevine is tall," Ladycats head coach Kathy Goings said. "They have two really good outside hitters, and we will need to limit their scoring on the outside. (Senior setter) Erin (Weiss) will need to move the ball quick among our hitters. Our defense will have to be ready to cover multiple shots. A big block will be important this match."

The winner of the match will advance to the regional tournament at Kimbrell Arena at McMurry University in Abilene and face the winner of today's Canyon Randall/Hereford regional quarterfinals match. The regional tournament semifinals are Friday, with the winner of the Aledo/Grapevine match playing at 7 p.m. The regional final will be at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Aledo Ladycats basketball team will host Mansfield Lake Ridge in the season opener for both teams.

The varsity game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the AHS gym.

The freshman and junior varsity games will tip off at 5 p.m.
