Aledo ISD Athletic Director Tim Buchanan to receive HERO Award during Bearcats home game on Friday

Posted

For the last three decades, Aledo ISD Athletic Director Tim Buchanan has won football state championships as a coach, and as an athletic director has seen the district through its rapid growth and had a huge hand in establishing the Aledo brand.

Now he will get rewarded for his efforts over the past 23 years.

Between the first and second quarters of Friday’s Aledo/Brewer football game at Bearcat Stadium, Buchanan will be awarded with the Bayard H. Friedman HERO Award.

The award is in partnership with the Score A Goal In The Classroom School Incentive Program, as the most outstanding football coach and athletic director in North Texas.

Walter Dansby, a former Fort Worth ISD superintendent and former basketball coach at Southwest and Paschal, is a board member of the Score A Goal program and will present the award.

“It is a great honor to receive an award of this caliber,” Buchanan said. “Ernie Horn (Executive Director of Score A Goal In The Classroom Incentive Program) got in touch with (Aledo ISD administrative assistant)  Mandy (McCarley)  to tell me I am the recipient of this year’s award.

“I am extremely honored, but the bottom line is that I would not been named to this award had it not been for the Aledo players, coaching staff, community members and supporters. This is more like a community/school district award and I have the privilege of being the recipient.

“All that is tied in to any success I have had as an athletic director. It is not me; it is a community award really, and a coaching staff award. One person doesn’t do what we have done in Aledo over the last 20-plus years.”

Buchanan, who came to Aledo ISD in 1993, as head coach won the school’s first state championship (Class 3A) in 1998 and followed with state titles in 2009, ’10, ’11 and ’13. As head football coach, he compiled a 227-53-3 record (.802 winning percentage).

Buchanan stepped down as head coach in July of 2014 to assume full-time athletic director duties.

In addition to the HERO Award, Coach Buchanan is receiving a $1,000 honorarium in appreciation for all he does for the Aledo community.

The HERO The award was established in Friedman’s memory, to honor outstanding school employees. Friedman, a renowned civic leader and Fort Worth mayor, was a strong proponent of challenging students and educators to continuously strive to raise the level of education and excellence of those in positions of serving our children and communities.
