Homecoming Night: No. 2 Bearcats will host Saginaw Friday night in District 6-5A contest

Aledo junior running back Donnie Evans (27) and senior quarterback Dillon Davis (8) hope to repeat their respective performances from last week when the Bearcats host Saginaw at 7 p.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium on Homecoming Night. Evans rushed for 120 yards and scored four touchdowns last week against Chisholm Trail, while Davis passed for 325 yards with three touchdowns.

After a week of Homecoming festivities which included a parade and a pep rally, the state-ranked No. 2 Aledo Bearcats are ready to play some football.

The Bearcats (4-0, 1-0 in 6-5A) will face the Saginaw Rough Riders (1-3, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium on Homecoming Night in a battle of District 6-5A unbeaten teams.

The 2016 Aledo High School Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.

A lot of times coaches fear Homecoming activities will take away focus from their team, but Bearcats head coach Steve Wood embraces Homecoming week and all of its activities. Wood feels the parade and the activities capture the true spirit of Aledo.

“Homecoming week is good, it’s neat, and to me the Homecoming parade really says ‘Aledo,’” Wood said. “I was really taken aback by the parade the first time I saw it. It is neat concerning all the involvement by the students, and a lot of people come to the parade.

“I have always thought the Homecoming parade was a neat deal, and I like the way it is handled and all the support it gets. Homecoming is special because every year past players come back and check out this year’s team and see how it compares to their teams. It is good to see the past players. There is a lot of pride in this community and it is a special time. This is a big deal.”

The Bearcats are coming off a 69-0 victory last week in the district opener, while Saginaw enjoyed its first win of the year with a district-opening 35-14 victory over Brewer.

Wood said the Rough Riders run a spread formation and will set up in shotgun formation. He expects Saginaw to put the ball in the air often.

“They run all shotgun and will throw the ball around,” Wood said. “They like to run a lot of screens, and they are catching on to what their new coach wants. It was a big win for them against Brewer. (Quarterback Cade) Puente is fast, and their tailback is fast and can take it to the house at any time.”

Wood was proud of his defense in posting its first shutout of the season last week. He feels the Bearcats’ defense is beginning to form an identity.

“I am proud of the way the guys (on defense) came out and played,” Wood said. “They came together and played like a team. I also like the shutout. We have a goal board (at the field house) for each game and one of the goals was a shutout.”

Saginaw will be facing a Bearcats’ offense that has averaged more than 500 yards per game while averaging 58 points per contest. Wood feels the running game is solid, and he is pleased to see all of his receivers get involved in the offense.

“We have some skill at wide receiver,” Wood said. “All of our receivers have just gotten so much better as the season has gone along. All of those guys played last year, and they are learning and growing up. And what else can you say about (senior quarterback) Dillon Davis? I am proud of him and the way he is guiding the offense.”
