Wood likes effort Saturday during Bearcats' scrimmage

Posted

Concluding their first week of practice, the Aledo Bearcats held a spirited scrimmage Saturday morning at Bearcat Stadium as the team prepares for the upcoming 2016 season.

The Bearcats scrimmaged their first-team offense against the first-team defense with the No. 2 units alternating series with the No. 1s. A mixture of 2s and 3s also scrimmaged, and head coach Steve Wood was not only pleased with the scrimmage, but with the first week of practices as well.

“I thought the guys had a lot of fire and played hard,” Wood said. “Like you expect in a first scrimmage we had some break downs in execution. We dropped the ball twice which is a no-no around here, but there were also plenty of positives on both sides of the ball. All in all, I thought this first week of practice was as good of a first week that we have ever had.

“I thought our Thursday practice, despite not getting to wear the pads, was our best practice of the week. We changed our format just a bit and upped the tempo and pace of practice, and we challenged them to try and practice at a rate of effort that will make the games easier for them. It was full-speed reps – it does us no good to practice at half speed.

“I think the kids were on top of their games. They practiced all week with emotion, and overall it was a very positive first week. This was a good start.”

Quarterback Dillon Davis completed several passes to receiver Hunter Rosson, including a 25-yard effort to begin the scrimmage. Later in the scrimmage, Davis threw a 33-yard TD strike to Logan Paterson. Back-up quarterback Zane Hayden also turned in a solid performance with TD passes to freshman Money Parks, Will Greenwood and Beau Mask against the second-team defense.

The Bearcats' first-team defense allowed just one score and forced the offense out on downs on four occasions.

"I thought we flew around the football on defense pretty well," Wood said, "and I liked it that we played with a lot of emotion.”
