Final tune-up: No. 1 Bearcats host Byron Nelson in Friday morning scrimmage

Aledo 6-6, 335-pound offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga (66) moves the pile last week during the Bearcats' intrasquad scrimmage. The Bearcats will host Byron Nelson in a scrimmage at 9 a.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium.

In their final tune-up before beginning the regular season, the Class 5A state-ranked No. 1 Aledo Bearcats will host Byron Nelson High School at 9 a.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium.

The varsity will scrimmage first, followed by the junior varsity scrimmage at 10 a.m. The freshman team will scrimmage at 10 a.m. at the Daniel Ninth Grade Campus football field.

The scrimmage will give Bearcats fans a chance to get a glimpse of 6-6, 335-pound offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga, a move in from California, who head coach Steve Wood has adjusted to the heat and fit in well with his teammates. Fans will also keep a keen eye on Wes Harris, the senior all-state offensive guard who was moved to defensive tackle in the spring.

Wood said his players have put in two good weeks of practice and are ready to compete with someone other than themselves.

“I just want to see us hit on somebody else,” he said. “I want to see us compete. We will make some mistakes, and that is to be expected, but we just want to see great effort out of them.”
