Norman Ray Payne, 70, died peacefully in Fort Worth on Monday, July 18, 2016.

Norman was born August 20, 1945, in Hillsboro to Holmes Payne and Thelma Bearden Payne. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1963 and Hill County College and Sam Houston State University. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1970.

Norman married Sheila Jackson on April 9, 1977. They met while serving as best man and maid of honor to their friends one year earlier.

He worked as toy manager at Leonard's Department Store and then 34 years for the Fort Worth School District, finishing as warehouse manager.

Norman enjoyed hunting, fishing, participating with his sons in sports activities, visiting national parks with his family, and just being in God's outdoors.

His candor, his cartoon voices, his numerous antiquated funny one liners will all be missed.

Norman was a kind, gentle, and tender-hearted family man who loved country music, Jerry Clower stories, Aledo Bearcat football, Texas Rangers baseball, homemade ice cream, and his sister's pecan pie.

Norman was a member of the Castleberry church of Christ. He loved the Lord and freely and generously devoted his time and energy in the Lord's service. He served as a deacon in multiple congregations for nearly 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Garland; niece, Teresa Odom; and nephew, Randy Payne.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila; sons, Timothy (Stacy) and Kyle; his grandson, David; sister, JoAnn Thomas (Richard); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Tye Cemetery, 1311 Oak Grove Road S., Burleson. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22 at Greenwood.
