AHS senior Madeleine Shelton headed for internship

Posted

When teacher Arlene Shelton was selected to attend the International Entrepreneur Institute in South Carolina, little did she know daughter Madeleine would be joining her for the weeklong event. Madeleine, who will graduate from Aledo High School next week, will also attend the institute in an internship role that was developed specifically for her.

Arlene Shelton, art teacher at Daniel Ninth Grade Campus, was chosen as one of only 50 teachers nationwide to participate in the forum. Her goal is to develop curriculum in which students can thrive as they advocate for the arts. It will entail allowing them to create artworks for audiences to purchase, and also help develop their creative spirits as they network within their communities.

“We want our local communities to get to experience the arts, and for our students to feel confident in this entrepreneurial role,” she said.

Madeleine has interests in blogging, social media and marketing. When Regan Durkin, program director of IEI, discovered Madeleine’s interests and skills, she developed a new intern position for Madeleine. Arlene Shelton said Ms. Durkin’s background is in digital marketing, and she is excited to have Madeleine develop digital marketing for the program.

“I’m excited for this chance to spend some time together doing something we both enjoy,” Madeleine said.

Arlene said she looks forward for the chance for them to learn as a team. “I will be watching what she will be doing and taking notes,” she said.

Madeleine considers this opportunity a kick start to her career in communications and photography. She will begin classes at Weatherford College in the fall. Her blog, www.madeleineshelton.com, will go live June 6.
