Playing with four sophomores and a freshman, the Aledo Ladycats golf team was a surprise qualifier for the girls’ Class 5A state golf tournament at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop.

At the regional tournament the Ladycats advanced as the third-place team, but the squad earned a feather in its cap when it came back in the second round to defeat Joshua for the final spot. Joshua had beaten the Ladycats by 40 strokes at the District 8-5A tournament, where Aledo finished second.

After Monday’s opening round the Ladycats were 12th among 12 teams after shooting a 383, and on Tuesday the AHS ladies did not gain any ground, shooting a 400. The team finished in 12th place with a 36-hole total of 783.

“This tournament was all about gaining experience,” AHS head golf coach Jeff lemons said. “It was all about the learning experience. The girls had a good time, and they got to experience something not many high school girls get to experience.”

Rylee Gabbert and Madison Wyss each finished with 36-hole totals of 194 to lead the Ladycats. Gabbert shot 89 in the opening round on Monday and carded a 105 today. Wyss shot 93 on Monday and 101 today.

Lilli Ingram finished at 203 (102-101), followed by Deyton Deller with a 212 (119-93) and Natalyn Yates with a 216 (99-117).
