Bearcats break open tight game with eight late runs to take 9-2 win over Burleson

Aledo broke open a 1-1 game with six unanswered runs and added two more in the seventh as the Bearcats handled the Burleson Elks, 9-2, Friday night in a District 8-5A baseball game at Burleson.

The win elevates the Bearcats' district mark to 9-3, while the Elks drop to 4-8.

Aledo recorded 12 hits in the contest but back-loaded its scoring. The 'Cats took a 3-1 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jacob Ashkinos had an RBI-single in the frame, and Griffin Benson scored from third base after a wild pitch.

Aledo sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run sixth inning to increase its lead to 7-1. With the bases loaded, Rhett Anderson reached on an infield error that plated Peyton Berkley. The next batter, Griffin Benson, walked to plate Carter Windes, who had reached on an infield single.

Nick Cheema followed and was hit by a pitch to bring in Hunter Rosson for a 6-1 advantage. Rosson led the Bearcats with three hits.

Aledo closed the scoring in the frame when Anderson scored on a wild pitch.

After Burleson scratched for a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats closed the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

With the bases loaded, Cheema ripped a line-drive single to left field to drive in Rosson for an 8-2 lead.

Jacob Ashkinos followed and was hit by a pitch that plated Anderson as Aledo led 9-2. Anderson and Rosson each scored three runs in the contest to lead AHS.

Relief pitcher Trevor Brosette, who came on in the sixth, sent Burleson down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Kannon Brown was the winning pitcher for Aledo. The junior allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in five innings.

The Bearcats will continue district play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 at home against rival Granbury.
