Aledo eighth graders win essay contest

Weatherford Daughters of the American Revolution recognized two eighth graders as winners of the recent essay contest during an awards luncheon held March 22 in Weatherford. First place winner was Emma Rawley and second place was Weston Adams, both students in Mrs. Roady’s American History class at Aledo Middle School.

Sixty-three essays were entered in the first year for this contest to be offered in Parker County. The theme was “A Colonial Family’s Reactions to The Stamp Act,” commemorating the 250th anniversary of this momentous event in American History.  The Stamp Act, passed in 1765 by British Parliament, required all colonists to pay a tax on every piece of paper they used. American colonists viewed this as “taxation without representation.”

Vickie Lunden, a retired educator and member of DAR, coordinated the contest.
