Whitener blasts three home runs to lead Ladycats to 10-0 win

Posted

Aledo sophomore third baseman Bailee Whitener smashed three home runs and drove in four runs to lead the Ladycats to a  10-0 victory over Everman Tuesday afternoon in a District 8-5A make-up softball game at AHS that was called on run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Ladycats will play a scheduled district game later this afternoon as they travel to Burleson High School for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Whitener is on a hot streak of late at the plate. She hit a home run Monday night in the Ladycats' win over Crowley, and over the past two games has gone six-for-six at the plate with four homers, a double and seven RBI. She said doing extra hitting work with Ladycats head coach Heather Oakes and her personal hitting instructor has helped her swing the bat with more consistency.

"I had not been hitting well the past two weeks," Whitener said. "I have been working on my hitting technique, working with my coaches, and I am seeing the ball better, too. All of my homers today were inside pitches. On my third home run the pitch was high but close enough to the (strike) zone to make contact."

Oakes did not start regulars Kadyn Kirkpatrick, Gracie King, Landri Mays and pitcher Hannah Andrews as she wanted to rest a lot of her lineup for later this afternoon. Because of rain outs and the regular schedule being front loaded at the beginning of the week  because of spring break, after the Burleson contest the Ladycats would have played three district games in 24 hours. The Ladycats will conclude this week's busy district schedule with a 6:30 p.m.  game Wednesday at Burleson Centennial, the fourth time this game will tried to be made up. It was originally scheduled for March 8.

In place of Andrews in the circle against Everman was sophomore pitcher Megan Reynolds, who earned the shutout win. She allowed only one hit while walking four and striking out four in six innings.

Making her first District 8-5A start in the circle this season was Megan Reynolds, shown firing a pitch in the first inning of the Ladycats' 10-0 win over Everman this afternoon at AHS. The Ladycats led 3-0 after four innings. Whitener led off with a homer in the second inning, and she sent another solo blast over the left-field fence in the fourth. Sophomore catcher Macy Hale also added a solo home run in the fourth frame.

Aledo exploded for five runs in the fifth. Whitener hit her third homer - a two-run blast over the left field wall - Lindsey McElroy legged out an infield hit that plated two runs, and Brynn Hellman, who had reached on an infield single, scored on a wild pitch.

The Ladycats added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to stop the game. Mykayla Stroud and Hellman each scored on a wild pitch to give AHS the necessary runs for a run rule.

The Ladycats are 3-0 in district play with all three games ending on run rule.
