Reed Vierling scored on a header off a free kick by Lane Vidaurri to lift the Aledo Bearcats to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Arlington Heights Thursday night in a Class 5A boys' bi-district playoff match at Brewer High School.

The win advances the Bearcats to the area round where they will face Wichita Falls High School, a 1-0 winner over Fort Worth Poly on Thursday in a first-round playoff match.

Date, time and location of the area match has yet to be determined.

With the score tied at 1-1 after 80 minutes of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period, in the second overtime period the Bearcats took control.

With just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, Heights was called for a foul and Aledo was awarded a free kick form about 50 yards out.

Vidaurri sent a towering kick toward the Heights' net, and Vierling elevated and snapped a header that went past the Heights goalkeeper and into the net with 6:37 left in the second OT to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.

"We practice that play every day," Vierling said. "Lane got it up in the air and he was aiming for a spot in front of the goal. I got to that spot and got a good header on it and it went in."

The Bearcats controlled play for the rest of the overtime period (there is not sudden death in high school soccer overtime) to secure the win and advance to the second round.

The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the match. Tanner VanCuren found Joaquin Gonzalez free on the right side of the net, and the crafty senior midfielder finished the play by depositing his quick shot in the back of the net.

Heights tied the game with 16:19 left in the first half on a header after a corner kick.

There was no scoring in the second half.

Huddleston found the back of the net twice in the first half and Haley Knesek added a goal as the Ladycats led 3-0 at the half.

Huddleston put on a footwork display on her third goal which gave the Ladycats a 4-0 cushion. On the play, Huddleston dribbled down the left side, sharply cut to the middle but while straddling the goal line before cutting in front of the net and sliding the ball past the WHHS 'keeper and into the net.

Huddleston found the back of the net for the fourth time when - racing down the middle of the field - she split two defenders and scored from 12 yards out to increase the Ladycats' lead to 5-0.

Knesek scored her second goal of the match with 32:10 remaining, and Peyton Laughley  scored on a rebound to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Ladycats closed the scoring with 27:29 left to play when Laughley scored her second goal of the contest on an assist from Eden Wise.

Covington came up with two big saves - the second on a diving effort - in the second half to preserve the shutout.
